Did BMW make a 4.4 w/o secondary air ?
I'm still in the process of swapping the motor in my '05 X5. We had some life get in the way so it was on hold for a bit. The motor that I bought is out of a '06 X5. My old motor has secondary air tubes cast into the heads just above the exhaust manifolds.the new motor does not have them. The heads are different. I called the salvage yard and they have no explanation for this; but say the motor will work in my X5. The block does have N62B44A stamped in it. Is it possible someone put 4.8 heads on it? Is it because it was in California? Do I need the secondary air here in Wisconsin for cold weather starts? Will the motor run in my X5 but I will always have a check engine light on? Can anyone answer this for me; I really don't want to go through all the work of putting it in and finding out that it won't work. Thanx in advance

Just by looking at part diagrams I was under the impression that N62 engines on E53 did not have secondary air system installed.

You would have to code out the sap or you will get errors. SAP probably the most important part of the anti smog system so I can't imagine how a motor in the USA wouldn't have.
On my motor I thought the SAP goes into the exhaust manifold not the heads Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
the E53/N62 did not have the secondary air like the same motor in the sedan. I don't know why, but they didn't. I replaced an engine with one that came out of a sedan. There was a threaded plug in the original motor and I took those out and put into the new(sedan) engine. Was very simple and easy. The motor will run fine without SAS.

That doesn't surprise me but how does that explain this engine without the ports.

THANK YOU GUYS
Hey guys, I just wanna say thank you for the info. Now I can start tearing the new motor apart and replacing all the gaskets. That explains why I have plugs in the pipes on my old motor... lol. I was wondering how it would get air. But I guess it doesn't have secondary air then...Barry
