Grilles

Anyone have a recommendation for some good quality eBay gloss black grilles?

Purplecty 05-14-2020 11:34 PM

Noone?

I attempted to find a good set once. They fit terribly and I switched back to OE and black plastidipped them with glossifier. Doesn't look perfect. But it's good from 5 feet or more.

Pre-lci has more options than lci but at one point I seem to remember a company having a decent set available. Maybe bimmian or jlevi? Not even sure if they are around anymore. Maybe bimmerworld? Good luck. I think they'd look great on the imola.

Automotive paint. If you have an extra set, drop them off at your local body shop and ask them to spray them next time they paint black (which is often). I did. $40. Dunzo!

I did prep them for paint, so that is likely why it was so cheap...:dunno:

Have pics? How'd they turn out? Sounds like a great idea.

I "accidentally" bought a gloss black set off Alibaba [emoji2958] We will see how they fit! Can't be worse then what is on there now...

Unfortunately I don't. It was on our e39. It had the gloss black trim, but the kidneys were chrome. Weird.

I'll look through the computer pics and see if I can come up with one.

Because the outer parts of the kidneys are "chrome", you will have to use an acidic based primer. I used to work in a body shop so I was able to get a hold of some. I suspect that there are now single component acidic based metal primers that work well, but I don't know for sure. I have been out of the industry for some time. That said, I am sure that the local automotive paint supply store can help you select the right product.

Good luck! :beerchug:

I had a set painted at a auto shop. Looks really good with on my X5. Could never find a good gloss black set.

I did mine with a aerosol etch primer and a premixed aerosol of my car colour plus tin of lacquer easy job just be careful splitting your grilles apart as the clips are fragile , did the washer jet grilles aswell .

Thanks! much better than the broken clipped, bad plastdipped ones that were on there before.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5c297e59dc.jpg

Those look great! Huge improvement!

I'm trying to decide on whether I'm going to replace mine with what came on the car, Titan Silver, or go gloss black. I do have shadowline trim so that is kind of nudging me towards black.

Yeah since the 4.6iS doesnt have any chrome outside of the badging, I felt that gloss black was a proper fit.

There are less 4.6s but I don't think they are rare enough to ever appreciate, there is not enough demand. I say do what you want and enjoy it. I have the old grilles but I went to Carbon fiber grilles many years ago.

Off topic but are there more e39 M5s or 4.6is probably still on the road today? Obviously the e39 m5 has its demand, but are they really currently more rare than a 4.6iS?

bcredliner 07-18-2020 04:14 PM

Have no idea how many E39 M5s or 4.6s are on the road. In most cases rarity only matters to BMW enthusiasts. The 4.6 is an example. There are very few BMWs that are collector cars with high demand to drive up the value.

As an example, if one had the first 4.6 made and it had 89 miles on it and was the lowest production color and interior combination and fully loaded how much would it be worth today and in 10 years from now? Would it be a good investment?

Where did you buy them? Planning for black grills, mesh and black door handles. I'll just have the latter two painted.
