Yes. Get yourself an aftermarket Android head unit. It's some of the best money I've spent on my X. Gives you blue tooth streaming, access to apps and GPS. If you have a business radio the installation is pretty simple. I would recommend the Avin Avant 4. A number of us on here have put them in. Since you have DSP you'll need the IBUS app and dongle. The IBUS is good to have even if you don't have DSP, it gives you access to everything in the OBC. You can copy all your CD's to a micro Sd card and plug it into the hidden port in the unit and all your music is there for you.

Thank You. I will look into that!!

Dont get an aftermarket head unit, they look ghetto and ruin the original layout. Get the Bluebus unit, it'll be far superior.

They don't look "ghetto". They look just like a factory Nav head unit. Does the factory Nav look "ghetto"?

I Think it look awesome. I Think I will get one. Just have to figure out wich features to add. Is there a mic in the unit or you have to order one??

It comes with a mic, but you can also order one in case you want to position it closer to your head. The mic it comes with is in the front of the head unit.

To the OP, what are you looking to gain?
JUST Bluetooth and handsfree? Then get the BlueBus. Search for it on this forum

if you want the NAV screen, then do an aftermarket but be careful of which you choose to work with your DSP and make sure it looks proper in the dash as some of them look like shit.

I have to disagree with the assumption that my Avin Avant-4 looks ghetto. If the OP just wants to stream music via A2DP Bluetooth and have a Bluetooth hand-free phone solution only without changing any existing components currently in his X5 then the BlueBus is the way to go.

However, if the OP wants to take his X5 to the next level with navigation and a multitude of additional features, then the open source Android operating system Android Avant-4 would be the way to go with costs being very similar.

Now about the look of my my ghetto X5...

And I'd have to agree with the description! (I think I just threw up a little bit...)

The Avant-4 on the other-hand, is about as factory-looking as it gets!!

yeah, and for me 1100 US$ (11000 SEK) twice the price!! Sigh!!

Wayne and Nilsson, how much is $350 USD in your countries? I have a brand new Avant-4 with Android 9 and the PX6 processor here in the box. I bought it last year as a spare but really have no need for it. I am guessing the shipping would be expensive but check and see how much it would be.

These work with dsp?

Yes sir, mine has DSP. You only need the iBus adapter and iBus app on the Avin to command the DSP signals. The iBus app and adapter are really needed anyway to reset any of your OBC values anyway once you remove the factory mid or navigation.

350$ is 3500 SEK. A flat rate box to Sweden at USPS is 100$ 1000SEK.
If I could buy yours it would save me 450$ 4500 SEK!
PM me if you want to make a deal!!

Tell me what you have currently as far as DSP or navigation. The unit I have does not have the rear harness needed for the factory navigation replacement. If you have DSP you will need the iBus adapter. Let me know what you have so we can figure out what is needed to complete your retrofit.

I have a CD/Tuner in the dash together with MID. In the trunk I have a DSP amp. I do not need the harness going from the trunk. I Think I need the iBus adapter, and thats it. Is there a microfon in the unit, or do I need to buy one??

Overboost 05-20-2020 11:41 AM

The Avin has a built in mic on the face but I used an external mic mounted on my overhead console.

nilssonulf 05-20-2020 12:04 PM

OK! I can get that in Sweden if I want!!

Thanks OB! Man, I'd loved to have helped you out and myself too!

Sounds like you are sorted with Nilssonulf (Ulf?) though - good stuff!

FWIW, US$350 = NZ$572 (at today's rates) so add US postage (:yikes:) and 15% tax + fees at NZ 's border... I guess it would have been cheaper than direct from Avin. Bloody kind offer... ;)

Sadly, while COVID-19 hasn't pulled the entire rug from under my livelihood (like in your case... :( ) it has unravelled some threads, with things like increased workload, reduced pay, re-structuring etc. so I'm not in a position to doing anything but the bare minimum required to keep vehicles on the road...

Yes, I think Nilsson is going to take it, I just have to get the X5 back up and running so I can get to the post office to arrange shipping.

I know what you mean about slashed budget. The wife and I are counting pennies at this point and selling things I really don't need. I sold my Porsche PIWIS 2 last week for $1,200 last week. The R6 is also up on the chopping block along with our baby grand piano. :banghead:

WPOLL, yes the name is Ulf. Pretty hard for you to pronounce. But if you say Ulfie is esiar for u, and ok for me.
Yes, I will buy it from OB. But I can wait. No stress OB, just so you know.
It is a bargain for me since this covid-19 makes SEK Worth nothing. Yoday you have to pay 10 SEK for 1 US$. Then add 25% VAT and customs fee! :(
I hope you guys manage through this crazy time. Me myself are IT-Consultant so covid-19 dont bother me that much. Network and computers have to run anyway. Take care, and when u ready OB, we make the arrangements for shipping.

I am assuming your X5 is LHD? As mentioned, brand new, never installed. Including today, it has been out of the box twice. Here are a couple of pictures of it. It will be heading your way.

I would guess the volume and tuning knobs are reversed but I really don't know. There is an option for RHD but I can't really say what the differences are. :dunno:

One last thing to consider, since this one was a US destination the radio band may not be correct by default, you will need to adjust the settings to your frequencies for Finland. Easily done I suppose, there is not a separate device for worldwide delivery?

I wondered that too. I don't know if it would be worth the enginnering to swap the knobs - most everything else we get here is identical to LHD - except the actual steering wheel and pedal position etc!

For example, on most (Japanese etc.) cars in NZ, the left stalk is headlight, wipers etc. and the indicators etc. are on the right stalk. On Euro cars, the stalks are reversed, i.e. the indicators are on the left... I've gotten pretty good at doing the mind-swap as I jump from my BMW (LHD stalks), my daughter's VW Golf (LHD stalks) and the wife's Mazda (RHD stalks). On rare occasions, I'll pull up to an intersection in my wife's Mazda and turn on the wipers....

Manual transmission Euro cars can be a handful to drive around town, given the same hand is required for both gear shifting and operating the indicator stalk….

Some Euro cars here even still have the centre console layout from the LHD version, putting the park brake handle over next to the passenger (left) seat!!!

yes_its_neil 05-22-2020 03:25 AM

I think the Avant intelligently has the built in microphone located centrally, the 2 android units I have had in my E53 and E83 had/have the microphone on the left hand side of the front panel, adding several inches from the driver in our right hand drive vehicles.

nilssonulf 05-22-2020 04:52 AM

My wife are from Thailand. She have a RHD Honda we use when we go there. They drive on the left side. Imagine me coming from a right side traffic land and used to drive a LHD car . I will spare u the rest! Hahahahaha….

My last LHD experience was driving a rental Chevy Suburban from Las Vegas to Santa Monica, via some sections of Route 66. What fun!

You get used to it pretty quickly, especially on larger freeways. Gotta be careful on left turns and remember go wide and over to the right, rather than hugging the curb!! ;)

Thank U again OB. If you need anything, dont hesitaste to ask me. Reasonable things thou…..:rofl::rofl:

We are a small family of X5 enthusiasts here and all of us are happy to help out other members. You have found the premier forum for keeping your E53 looking and performing at its best.

Once your Avant-4 arrives, we can help with all the programming all the nice little features that unit provides. I would spend some time looking through the Avant-4 posts from around the net and see how flexible the system can be. One of our members even made a video of a complete install on a nav equipped car (not applicable in your instance) but watching the install gives great information.

Looking at your linked video, I am pretty happy I dont have to install a new harness from the trunk.

What I am thinking about now, is to buy a mic and wire it while waiting for the "big bang" to arrive. Or is the mic in the head unit ok for a decent phone call??

Yes it seems to work fine. I did install mine in the overhead console as posted in that thread I linked. Sound is probably much better on the other end of my calls since the mic is inches away from my speaking instead of feet. :dunno:

It is a simple 3.5mm jack on the harness for the external mic so you could try the internal mic and if you want to change it later, you could do it when you add the rear cam.
