P0011 and P0021 Codes after transmission work..
Hey ppl,
I am getting P0011 (Intake Cam Position Timing Over Advanced - Bank 1) and P0021 (Intake Cam Position Timing Over Advanced - Bank 2) codes after doing some transmission work and the car runs like crap and gives me several misfire codes on Bank 1 as well. What I am suspecting is I may have broken the timing when I was installing the TC bolts. After inserting the bolts and rotating the crank, the person who was doing the turning told me the crank was not turning and he forced it (a lot). Apparently the TC bolts were not in fully which was causing the issue. After I tightened them all the specs the crank was turning fine but now the car runs like crap and those codes. Is it possible to 'advance' timing accidentally while trying to turn the crank when it is stuck? I have checked everything else so far including the chain and the guides all look ok.. Thanks, Ozzie |

You would have to hold the cam somehow when turning the crank to mess to the timing (I had a bad experience). That said on the N62 several threads have exampled a case of the rekuctor wheel getting loose.
On M62, usual case of the error you have is a worn out cam position sensor. Two different M62 that I did timing chain guides, they ended up with that error on at least one bank and cute was new CPS. |

When I was setting the timing I left the timing Gizmo in place and loosened the nut that holds the timing plate while doing the 720° rotation that snugs up the timing chain. Well the problem is the nut is left hand thread so it tightened up and started turning the cam shaft!

P codes are just generic codes. I would find someone that can scan the X with BMW specific scanning tools. Something may have gotten lost in the translation from the code that the X is throwing versus what the generic scanner is translating the code to be.
I would also look into or replace the Variable Valve Timing solenoid that controls the amount of oil going to the Vanos. Could be the solenoid is not actuating the vanos as intended. Good Luck. |

Update : Looks like I have found the problem. I finally pulled up the Bank 1 side valve cover and first thing I saw was the exhaust camshaft sprocket being loose. The bolt was about to fall off actually. So, that means there was no movement on the exhaust side and quick shut down by Engine Computer. With the hope of no engine damage, I will re-time that side and see what happens. Thanks for all the help once again, Ozzie |
There is no sensor on the exhaust cam on M62 I can't remember if we had to replace both exhaust and intake valves when chain broke.
I remember changing about 6-8 valves but can't recall if all were intake and exhaustive search on the web I could not find the answer. Crazy that M62 nut got loose I've heard of N62 happening but M62 has a stupid amount of torque on those T55s. Did you have that apart for timing job recently and did you properly torque that bolt? Some torque wrenches won't do CCW torque. |

Hey Andrew, Never did any timing job on those before. It will be my first once I receive the tools from German Auto Solutions. I am hoping to get away without working on Bank 2.
