Electrical Issue

3 Attachment(s)
I was driving a few miles from my place and then noticed the ABS light came on followed by the traction and then the brake and trans fail safe when coming to a stop. The coolant temp guage and oil temp went to max, speedmoter and rpms were also dead and the AC stopped working too. It seems to be stuck in a weird electrical gremlin loop. I scanned the car and had can bus errors for ASC and EGS in the DME and The trans module. I was unable to clear the ASC error in the DME. I read another thread from a 4.4 x5 and was pinpointed to the ABS Module. I have a spare rebuilt one from an e46 and hoping it will work on the X5. If not, I'll have mine rebuilt. Please see the attached video and link to another thread. I was for some strange reason unable to connect ISTA-D to the car. It would not even register the vehicle which must be related to all of this...

You getting a fluctuation in voltage?

The cluster shows a steady 13.5v while running.

After letting the car sleep overnight, the cluster returned back to normal and I was able to connect with ista and read and clear all the errors.Attachment 78393Attachment 78394Attachment 78395Attachment 78396

Don't you love how the "Fasten Seat Belts" message has double meaning for us E53 owners? LOL. Glad it came back. I just got my ABS module back from the repair depot. I was going to put it in today but its going to be 115F/46C today...so I think it can wait a few days longer. LOL.

Purplecty 07-11-2020 10:23 AM

Who rebuilt yours? BBA REMAN?

Purplecty 07-11-2020 02:07 PM

After a short drive all of the symptoms re-appeared...

wpoll 07-11-2020 04:21 PM

Seems voltage related... Alternator on the way out? 13.5v is a little lower than I would expect to see when running, but not low enought to cause your issues. Maybe it spikes low... :dunno:

Purplecty 07-11-2020 04:23 PM

Doubtful its a steady 13.5-13.8 which is the same as my E38 4.4. I will see if the spare abs module helps first...

Actually, I had Module Repair Pro in Van Nuys do it as they have an awesome warranty and turned it around in a day so it was there on Monday and out the door Tuesday and back in my mailbox on Thursday.

Thanks my symptoms came back again. Tried a 30 min battery nap and still no luck...

PalmSpringsE534.6 07-11-2020 07:21 PM

Have you tried feeding it today? I've found that when mine gets cranky if I feed it worth something around $1K it feels better and no longer cranky. <grin>

I feel your pain. I had my module repaired, now my timing chain tensioner is on the fritz. I put in a new windshield and last week it got blasted in a sand storm and is all pitted so I'm working on a solution for that. My telescoping steering column has started to make a noise. Lastly, in 110F heat I decided to open the "vent" on my moonroof and now that broke. It won't lift the back of the glass and now it rattles. So, I would say that mine has gotten a case of gluttony as it's been well fed recently. LOL.

Anyone have a pic of the back of an X5 4.6 ABS Module? Trying to see if this one will match up... Another video of the same issue.

Read your chassis errors. Mine had the same behavior when a wheel speed sensor stopped reporting. Lost the cluster, trio of dash lights, etc. You can bring up a menu to read all 4 simultaneously, and slowly drive it. One of them was reporting nothing.

They do a good repair, the ABS module needs to be coded to the vehicle if a unit is swapped.

So I removed the E53 ABS Module and it appears to be slightly different than the spare rebuilt e38 e39 module I have. I believe the 2 prongs the e39 one has is for the pre charge pump which the x5 doesn't have. I installed it just for testing purposes and sure enough I couldn't program it to the car due to a coding index issue of the module. With the e39 abs module installed, I still have the trifecta and no speedo but the X doesn't go into failsafe and everything else still functions properly. I will just send my original module out for repair. Attached is the E39 and then the E53 module to show the differences between tje 2 and the measurement of the screws that it uses. I think they are T20 torx?Attachment 78412Attachment 78413Attachment 78414Attachment 78415

I ended up going to the hardware store and buying M5 Allen heads to replace the aluminum originals. My Indy asked me to replace them but BMW doesn't list them as a part number. The M5 had the correct thread and diameter and I was able to match the depth easily.

I ended up purchasing the repair service from Module Repair Pro, Inc from the high recommendation by PalmSprings. I will ship it out tomorrow...

PalmSpringsE534.6 07-12-2020 11:29 PM

Hey Purple...I see you use Rheingold. Any recommended download location?

Purplecty 07-12-2020 11:30 PM

Shipped the module out for rebuild...

Purplecty 07-14-2020 07:31 PM

The rebuilding process here is very intersting. I wonder if the US rebuilders are doing the same thing?

That sure hi-lights how poor the original build quality is!

I need to send mine out, too.

Purplecty 07-16-2020 09:11 PM

Correction to PalmSprings earlier post on the screw size. He PM'd me letting me know they are actually M4 and 25MM long. Thanks for doing the research. I will just use my original ones since they still look fine...

Purplefade 07-29-2020 12:09 AM

That is outstanding! Glad to hear everything is back to normal and fingers crossed you get to enjoy your X for a while now [emoji106][emoji106]

Great endorsement for Module Repair Pro also, should any of us need them going forward.

Reading through previous posts on this thread...your cluster issue is data driven. A CAN module can definitely give symptoms where the cluster "hangs up" when the CAN messages aren't received properly. Might be worth checking the backbone, but if your ABS modules is sending out faulty data--it will def cause issues like you're seeing.

Well see once you get your rebuilt module back...

I have already posted that the ABS Module rebuild resolved the issue entirely!

That's good! I didn't see the last posts until now... -_- lol

I wish there was a way I can see more posts in a thread...instead of going to the NEXT page every 10 posts.
