Wheel Refinishing

I have an appointment next week to drop my OE style 87 wheels off for refinish / powdercoating. The previous owner had them done in black which I am not a fan of and are in pretty bad shape paint wise. I am leaning towards BMW Silver which I'd think is the original silver if not the closest to it? Anyone have any experience in this department? This will be my first time having wheels refinished...

Good choice going with OEM Silver. Sorry I do not know the paint code or name but I'm sure the OEM finish is in high gloss. I wish I had a set of 87's to refinish, best stock E53 wheel IMHO.

When I got a set of OE BMW wheels repainted locally, the body shop said there was a specific paint code for BMW wheels. He claimed to have bought the paint from a BMW dealer. It sounded strange to me and I am not sure if that was true but maybe worth asking at a friendly dealer?

They did say they add a clearcoat on top so I would hope that gives the high gloss or at least a semi gloss finish to it...

May be we can we swap? I have OEM 87 silver original color and I've been considering having them powder-coated to gun metal black.

What an eyesore! Yeah, there's a local wheels repair shop that can sandblast then powder-coat my 87 to gun metal black for $200 a piece.

Purplecty 08-05-2020 06:34 PM

I am getting that done for an even better price. I will post back when they are finished. We will see how they come out. They do look awful but the X is currently on style 275 with winter tires since purchasing...

$125/wheel is standard here. Had one of my Dad's 19's done recently to fix a bent OE wheel on his 535d.

Those are going to look awesome no matter what color you go with. Unless black. Don't go with black.

X5only 08-05-2020 11:59 PM

Most new cars nowadays come with black wheels. I dig them. Saw a silver E53 with black style 87 and it looked incredible. Mine is silver and would like the same look. My F86 is white with black wheels and looks awesome.

crystalworks 08-06-2020 12:18 AM

The world would be boring if we all liked the same stuff. Black wheels look dirty to me and disappear into wheel wells, but that's my tastes/opinion.

Do what you like purplecty.

I agree BMW silver all the way

X5only 08-06-2020 12:51 AM

Well, that's how it used to be in the past - every new car had silver wheels .. and now yet more silver .. cool! There's a reason for the new trend in the last few years ... go figure ...

Fuh raze! It's like underglow and tire flies (lol that trend was hilarious). I blame Porsche for the black wheel trend right now. Then other hipo brands started doing it and it went mainstream.

I'm glad we have so many options for wheel colors now from OE sources. I've rocked white wheels, silver, charcoal (nogaro), but not black. Black is a waste of design. Again IMO. We all have em, that's mine.

The shop did a good job. The wheels look great!

Purplecty 08-25-2020 08:24 AM

The best part is the shop ONLY charges $50 a wheel if they come in with no tires and you can choose any color you want. If they have to dismount the tires its an extra $25 a wheel. They are super duper busy as you can imagine with this mind of pricing...

Thats a very good price depending on quality. Dont see those prices even close in my hood. Took mine down south with a bulk order and had them done. Did they also coat the barrels as well and clear?

It looks like it but hard to tell. For $200 I couldn't be happier. They also allow you to choose any color you want...

Some people really know how to keep business a going concern. Volume and repeat business is what mints great money, not a few and far between good deals.

They look great. I refinished mine myself. I won't do that again. They turned out great, but a ton of work.

They do look great.

Fifty150hs, how did you refinish yours?

I had been looking into that bavauto wheel refinishing kit before they closed their door.

Purplecty, You inspired me to begin checking around here for powder coating services. One came back at $95 per wheel. Still need to check with 2 others.

Purplecty 08-26-2020 08:46 PM

$95 isn't a bad deal either...

absolutezero273c 08-26-2020 08:49 PM

But I liked $50 much better.

You can still get the kit through ECS, they bought them. I used the silver paint and I got 2K gloss clear which is great stuff. They turned out great, but tons of sanding, filling of dings, etc. It was at least 8 hours a wheel.

Thanks for that Fifty150hs. I was unaware that ECS purchased Bavauto.

And 8 hours. Wow!

Looks very good and what a price :wow: I think I wouldn't even bother to DIY if the price was so low in my area!

After curbing one of my refinished style 87s (so mad) I went and purchased a known genuine set I found for sale.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...573dbc1585.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6b7129b42f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...413f7480ca.jpg
