2005 4.4i required tools for intermediate levers
I plan on changing out one side of my intermediate levers.
I have not seen many howtos except for service bulletin that's out there. It lists a lot of special tools and after seeing the Jamaican mechanic use a shoestring to lock the cam and eccentric shaft on a 318i I figure there has to be somewhere in between buying all the tools on the TSB and using a shoe string :p: So my question is do I need to lock the motor down at TDC as if I am doing a timing job and use cam locking tools or can the levers be changed without messing with timing? |
I would approach it as if you were doing the valve cover gaskets - get the valve cover gasket set plus the gaskets for the cam and eccentric shaft sensors, along with an arsenal of metric sockets and some extensions, 3/8 & 1/4 inch ratchet and wrench’s and you should be set for the most part. That said, I don’t think the intermediate levers can be replaced without removing the eccentric shaft and possibly the intake cam so I would guess the timing tool is a necessity.
X5Only, member on here, actually has all of that available to rent [emoji106] I worked with him when I did my VSS job, lots of experience under the valve covers too. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |
Thanks, I have done valve cover gaskets before, along with sensors and vanos solenoids. I have the tools and was thinking i may purchase a timing tool and see if that will get me thru it.

Have the valve stem seals ever been replaced? If not, I'd advise to take this opportunity to replace them since you'll have done 80% of the tasks and just be one step away to reaching them.
I have for rent all the tools required (including the engine timing tools): https://xoutpost.com/classifieds/bmw...-5-months.html |

And it only adds about $80 to the overall cost of the project while you're already in there. |
I think i am going to replace the VSS and do the timing chain guides etc while im at it. I guess new water pump maybe a good idea too. I believe the alternator bracket is leaking too but i am not sure i want to wrestle with that.
Do I need to just replace guides or chains and guides? I would like to get a kit that includes everything. I will def rent the tools here. |
Timing chain guides will be a whole other beast all in themselves, engine has to be torn down significantly further to do the guides. The good news, most common issue on the N62 is the chain tensioner, replace that to keep the chain from slapping the guides and you should be good for a couple hundred thousand miles with the N62. That said, definitely check them but my money is on them being ok. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |
