EWS and Battery charging issues
Hey guys, I sure hope one of you can help me figure this out. I changed out my N62 in my 05 X5 after it was ran out of oil. I replaced every seal and gasket you can think of on the replacement motor including valve stem seals, and water pipe. I have spend gobs of money and time on this motor swap. After I finally got it running; I discovered torque converter got bent in change out process so then changed out tranny and transfer as long as we were taking it all apart again and was getting tranny and transfer errors. Finally get it all back together again and running and ran battery dead while scanning errors. Determined battery was bad anyway. Installed new battery and got it running again. Fox 530 told me I still had tranny and transfer errors also steering sensor error . While I had Fox connected I did battery register (I now know you don't have to register on E53) but too late damage already done. After that car is dead in the water and won't start. Fox told me EWS DME out of alignment. But Fox can't fix it. So I bought a cable and downloaded INPA but it terminated connection and couldn't fix it. Next I bought another cable and new INPA and DIS package with 5 cd's . We loaded that all in lap top and it is having connection problems as well. I determined it might be because voltage is below 12 volts. Even with battery charger on it. So what I started realizing is battery charger is getting hot and one of my chargers at 13 amp even kicked out trying to keep battery above 12 volts while trying to use DIS. It is as if the car senses that it is being charged and doesn't let the charge go to the battery; it instead just shorts it out or something. With battery disconnected from car it is taking a charge. I obviously have to figure this problem out before I can get the EWS aligned. Anybody know what this could be ?

I also noticed when it was running that it would run down in idle as if it was charging really hard and alternator was working hard. I suspect this problem has been there from beginning but am now noticing it.
Oh and by the way, If you live in the Green bay Wisconsin area and know how to fix this damn car and are willing to come over and fix it; I will pay you pretty much what ever you want to do so. A man can only take soo much and I am reaching the end of what I will take with this car. It is going to end very badly for this car soon. |
I would check all the wiring to make sure its not shorted out or pinched.for the charging circuit.

Yes I will look over the wiring around alternator. But if I had a wire that was pinched or grounded; wouldn't it just run battery dead? I can leave the ignition on and DIS running for like 5 minutes and voltage only drops like 1/2 a volt. Thats what's so concussing, if when charger is on it is as if all the charge goes right to a short. But without charger on battery can almost maintain its voltage. So is the charging circuit a separate entity which can be shorted out without draining the battery? I am not familiar enough with the circuitry on this vehicle to know that. Actually this car is pretty much making me look like a real dumbass.

or how about that extra duh hicky on the positive battery terminal ? Can that block any charge from charging circuit from going to battery ? I was previously hooking charger up under the hood. But suspected that might be the problem ; so I hooked up my 13 amp charger directly to the battery in the back. When I did that it went up to 15 amps charging and kicked out after 5 minutes.

Are you sure your installation of the INPA software is working?
When you run INPA does it show you a black dot on "cable detected" in the main screen? You have to make sure your software is working first. I would take the battery out of the car and test it to make sure it's good. Nowadays it's not uncommon for a brand new battery to have issues. Try to fully charge the battery out of the car and then hook it back up when you know it's 100% charged. For INPA to be able to do anything you must have your ignition in the accessory position or it won't be able to read the vehicle computers. |
With the engine running, what is the voltage at? You can check with a meter ,without going through INPA.

I don't know. I can't get it running because of EWS not aligned with DME. Which is why I bought the INPA and DIS software in the first place. Now you see my quandary. lol

You are going to need to get that battery/system voltage up to ~13.5V to get anywhere with a realignment I think. The modules freak out anywhere under ~12V. The 13A charger won't keep it high enough. With ignition on (no start position 2) the truck will draw 10-20A depending on what modules are doing from what I've read.
When you replaced the transmission did you use the mechatronics unit (trans computer, EGM) from your original trans? Or did you use the new one? |

Verify your INPA is installed properly as well as the driver for the ODB cable |
