E53 4.8is Front Diff Preload Setting

Hiya's,

No good telling you all of my tales of woe ..........

I fubared and hit my passenger side diff case (USA etc Drivers side) where drive shaft goes in the seal, i have lost so much hearing i didn't hear shaft pop out and clouted her again, of cause i put a small crack in the cast case as the pry bar had nowhere else to go except inwards into case lol

I have all the tooling to add a new diff i got, i have a rebuild kit and all seals etc for the swap

Thing is, i've been searching over a week without success for the crush sleeve preload

I've found the spec for the rear diff but not the front

At worst i thought checking preload on replacement diff before i strip but actual preload figure/s be great

Going doolally searching the net lol

Any help/specs be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Tony

Preload spec is for new pinion brgs. so trying to measure before taking it apart would probably give you a really low reading. I don't think you could go wrong using the spec for the rear diff though assuming you are using new bearings?

Hiya,

Yeah the kit is all new bearings/races outer seals (got o-rings and diff to block seal and odds n sods from bmw)

Will set to work stripping the new-to-me diff tomorrow

I will go with the rear spec for my new bearing type unless i get any info beforehand

Just waiting on engine brace to get delivered, typically i dumped a barely used engine crane due to lack of storage space lol

Thanks for the reply :-)

Have Fun

How did you make out with your diff?? I need to do pinion bearings on my rear and was wondering where you got your kit from??

Hiya,

I've yet to strip her down tell you the truth, life events overtook my plans somewhat lol, did sort the oil loss via a new seal though for a good temp fix

We go on lockdown nation wide thursday looks like so will crack on then

The Bearing Kit i got from racingdiffs.com They're based in Belgrade in Serbia
Mega fast delivery to the UK for mine, Koyo bearings so i'm happy

I will post back once i've stripped/rebuilt the diff

Take Care

Have Fun
