Brake Question

so i suspect i have a stuck caliper, symptoms are bad smell, both front wheel full of brake dust and back wheel barely any dust, change my pad once a year or two

so i did some brake job today but i was curious about something, are the brake pad suppose to be lock on the rotor when the car on park ? or they suppose to be fully retracted when on parking ?

If your caliper is stuck and pads are dragging, you should see blue rotors from heat of the dragging brakes.

You should be able to spin the wheels in the air. Excessive brake dust can be normal depending on the pads used.

Brake Question

They only float a couple 0.001 off the rotor when spinning.

A stuck caliper will wear the crap out of the pad/s affected.

Make sure to remove quide pins using 7mm hex and spray LOTS of brake cleaner in there to clean out the goop that COULD be in there. Then use a light coating of AGS (Napa) Syl-Glide before reinstall.

Just did all the stuff you guys says this morning, but now the break feel spongy, fluid level look same level before and after brake change(ya i open the cap before retracting) so wtf? No need to bleed right? Since i didnt open any brake lines

When was the last time you flushed the brake fluid out?

my garage did it january 2020

does it make sense that the pedal feel different now that my caliper are not stuck ?

Sounds like air got in the system some how. I would bleed them again. Are you100% sure there is no leaks?

Spongy = air. How immaterial.

If not in the abs block you can use pressure bleeder. You said caliper stuck, if the un-sticking process damaged a seal you'll be looking at new/refurbished calipers.

If no leaks just need to bleed.

Takimo 10-22-2020 08:33 PM

seem like no leak, will look again tomorrow , will it damage something if i drive with air in the system a couple week? garage are busy here

andrewwynn 10-22-2020 08:37 PM

Only real damage will occur is if you lack of breaking power cause you to crash. I would use the slam on the brakes and gravel method to test if all the wheels are working properly. Pull the ABS fuse then find some gravel or sand and slam on the brakes compare how long the skidmarks are. if the spongy corner still can lock up the break you’re pretty OK.

puddinboo 10-22-2020 09:59 PM

Yep should work, and don't forget the extra person to push on the brake .[emoji23]

100% makes sense. Does the vehicle still stop.as.fast? After I did full brake rebuilds all around, my pedal moved faster to the floor and felt softer but it was cause there was less resistance cause all guide pins were lubed and all pistons were rebuilt with new brake assembly fluid.

There are at least half a dozen threads on xo in the past 18 months where old school brake bleeding was unsuccessful. Everybody eventually uses a pressure bleeder. I bought mine before I tried because I read the threads first.

Takimo 10-23-2020 12:55 PM

Dont know if i did the right way, but no bubble at all, i did

Bleeder close , dad push brake , then open bleeder wait a few second no bubble so close bleeder, release brake pedaal.....and repeat

wpoll 10-24-2020 02:41 PM

There has been talk that suggests that manual brake bleeding over-extends the master cylinder (pushing the cup/seal deeper than normal into the bore) and damaging the master cylinder seals (if the bore is corroded).

This could lead to a poor master cylinder seal and a soft pedal feel.

I've manually bled car brakes for years and never had an issue but I vacuum bleed brakes now after reading that!!! It's also easier and a one man job - like pressure bleeding.

Takimo 10-24-2020 03:22 PM

just tought about a reason why it didnt work, i bleed it in my driveway which have a little slope, can that be the reason no bubble get out? basically when i do rear bleeding , front of car is pointing to the garage door, and then i switch to rear pointing garage door, and i bleed front

wpoll 10-24-2020 03:32 PM

It's certainly harder to push air downhill....
