Replaced CCV valves and Steering clock spring.
I replaced my CCV valves and my Steering clock spring this weekend. I have had no smoke the past 3 months of owning the car. Then I took it on the freeway for the first time and I got to my destination and it was idling for about 5-10 minutes. Saw some smoke, rev;d the engine and a huge cloud came out. I don't suspect valve seals since this is the first time it has done it. So Reading up here I figured to do the CCV valves. Mine didn't look bad, but had a bunch of oil in the lines, mainly driver side. Easy fix maybe 10 minutes. Haven't checked for smoke yet, I want to see if I have any vacuum leaks as well (just had the alternator bracket gasket done). Just did valve covers a month ago and no leaks anywhere. Fleabay $15 for both.

That took about a half hour. Not really hard at all. My steering wheel was off the alignment marks, so that was correct. Put everything back together and everything works fine ($35 fleabay). https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.clu...2df9741a44.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.clu...87df057d80.jpg Was a good weekend, was also able to get my BMW PA software working on my laptop and was able to see all the errors my car had and reset the airbag light. Was also able to see what "Check side lights" light was out in the software, front right. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.clu...b95ff2eec3.jpg |
If it was just the CCVs (fingers crossed) you may get some residual smoke as there is likely still oil film in the intake. If that happens you might want to try a good MAF/Throttle body cleaner or pull the TB and actually (try to) clean up the intake.
Just a thought if you continue to see plumes [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |
Thanks Purplefade, I will do that this weekend when I replace the thremostat (code has come on and off the past week). Their was a good amount of crud in the hose connection on top of the TB. Also want to take off the drivers side bottom CCV line since it attaches under the TB and was unable to get to it when the intake on.
Will report back what my findings are. |
Check side lights can be a confusing message - it refers to the angel eye (halo) lamp!
