Craigslist Finds

Another forum I belong to for Nissan Owners has a running thread in the Z32 (300ZX) section where folks post best of, worst of, and everything in between that is found on craigslist worldwide as it pertains to the Z32 chassis. So having come across a particularly good candidate E53 for the nth time here in Houston I thought I would share.

Feast your eyes on this beast.

RocketyMan 02-01-2021 02:28 PM

That car is ROUGH for only 136k miles for "excellent" condition...wow.

The rims are GROSS! :niceshoes: :thumbdown

I wish I could take the rear hatch cover tho...

Overboost 02-01-2021 02:29 PM

LOL. That thing is a complete roach. $7500 is about 3X what that is worth.

sidneyj 02-01-2021 03:39 PM

"Master P Exclusive!! Excellent condition and well maintained!" Oh my.

crystalworks 02-01-2021 04:23 PM

That thing has been for sale FOREVER in Htown. Hurts my eyes every time I am doing my weekly CL dives.

///Monster123 02-01-2021 04:25 PM

Gross wheels. $7500 seems way high.

ajacks8 02-01-2021 04:27 PM

Had me at “P. Miller edition *aka* (Master P) exclusive”

...all of a sudden - this thing sounds UNDER-PRICED ?!?!?!?

That thing is awful

CapeX5 02-01-2021 09:33 PM

Well that speaks volumes as to what happens when "expensive" cars become affordable. Steering wheel cover, that center console cover, obviously the wheels. Dillusional seller. I honestly wouldn't give the person $1k for it.

+1 :iagree:

plasstik 02-02-2021 12:42 AM

Post said "Well maintained vehicle". :dunno: REALLY!? If that's the case, I've got something for them to buy. I've seen better X5s in the the junkyard, 80% disassembled, water inside, windows broken, missing everything, as it's being crushed.

plasstik 02-02-2021 12:45 AM

Now that I think of it.....I wonder if I could get two of those.

Here's a 4.8iS someone might be interested in, stated 270k miles and transmission issues.

https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/d/...265950635.html

StephenVA 02-05-2021 04:15 PM

I can wait to see that one as i am sure it will be a good test case for lab testing for bacteria growth and diseases .:shakehead:

Love that arm rest on that one. Did the owner have chainmail on his right arm? Escapee from a Mad Max movie ?

Possibly spiked sleeves. Could have been a real culture war between interior/exterior? ...a war they both lost, apparently!

Nolimite39 03-17-2021 08:31 AM

A couple more from the great state of Texas:

A rare 350HP N62B44 X5 M-Sport
https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/ct...292549217.html Some people are just a bit too proud of what they are selling.

What have they done to this poor Pre-LCI
https://corpuschristi.craigslist.org...292248819.html

Was going to say a fair price but then, salvage title and beat interior smdh
https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/ct...292243866.html

Finally a decent potential 4.8iS for someone, priced on the high side and miles a bit high as well. Doesn't mention VSS work.
https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/ct...281013904.html

The other overpriced 3.0 from Houston
https://houston.craigslist.org/cto/d...292420455.html

crystalworks 03-17-2021 10:46 AM

4th one down is a 4.8 not 4.6. Been eyeing it for awhile but the black exterior doesn't speak to me. Was thinking offer $5000 and he'd probably take it. If not immediately, after sitting on the truck for a month.

^corrected, was slip of the finger, or a Freudian slip since my 4.6 has 168s.

I was thinking the same, you should try, it's been up for at least 2 - 3 weeks. Plus enacting the lack of VSS work should help significantly in moving the price toward your target.

Nolimite39 03-24-2021 03:50 PM

Says "problems in the motor", has the trifect lit up in one of the pics so maybe a fairly cheap fix. Calling c-bass. . . the black bastard could use a friend. . .

"Clean interior and exterior"? The thing is trashed and has a dent in the rear drivers side door.

Nolimite39 03-30-2021 04:12 PM

Not an E53 or even an X5 but so worth a drooling over. CW I think you need to expand your stable.

Ughhhhhh. Thanks Nolimite39. Now I have to know that exists. :wow: Same brilliantrot color as my turbo E30 was too.

Honestly if we hadn't just bought the F15... I'd be on the phone. E34's are starting to come up and that being original, with service records, would be hard to lose money on if it is in as good a condition as it shows in pics.

Edit: Speaking of non-E53 related CL finds. Picked these up for $100. Should look nice on the wagon after having them refinished.

It's already sold anyway. *Phew* Now I stop thinking about it.

I'm going to take them to wheels America. They refinish and paint them. I'll probably go with the oe look, charcoal centers and silver spokes.

https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/ct...317496506.html

I would personally be in the car on the way to Dallas right now but we are tying to buy a house so all spending is on absolute hold. Someone from XO buy this thing so I can convince you to sell it to me in a couple years!

At that mileage probably due for timing chain guides and valve stem seals. Take about $3500 off the asking and it would probably be a good deal.

N62 would be unlikely to need guides, but definitely would be in need of VSS if they hadn't been done. The fact that the dash is not lit up like a Christmas tree is a good sign for any 4.4i, M62 or N62.

X5only 06-17-2021 06:10 PM

Same year and color as mine. The body appears to be in good condition. Mine needed vss at around 120k miles. Let it idle for like 20 minutes and rev her hard, if no smoke it should be ok. $6k max.

That 4.6 is down to $10,800 if anyone is interested. Looks like he may be in a mood to bargain?

If anyone is really serious about it, I could go check it out for you? I will be down in the valley on Sunday evening and could swing by?

Aleman 07-25-2022 08:44 AM

No association, but had to share, since I love the color here. Needs some work, but could be a sweet ride for someone looking to get into a 4.8is on the cheap:

That one is pretty clean, but that 'M' badge on the tailgate has got to go.

Not sure about that '15 & later question. Maybe the maintenance is too high? :dunno:

My question: Why are there more '15 and later X5 on Craigstlist than E53s?

I'm going to guess a few reasons:
1) Production is a lot higher now., so there are more recent X5s than original.
2) E53s get totaled in basically any accident.
3) E53s are at a point in their price / maintenance cost curve where it frequently makes sense to junk them rather than put money in.

Net-net, E53 numbers are rapidly decreasing. New X5s keep pouring off the line. And people largely lease new ones, so the turnover rate is very high.

Why would you bother? The technology is so outdated now and for a couple hundred more you can get yourself an Avin Avant 4 and have something that has far more capabilities than the old original NAV.

And while it may look very close, I doubt it would fit correctly.

X5chemist 10-17-2022 05:40 PM

Hello Forum Friends...

Anyone in the HOUSTON Area? I am considering the purchase of a 4.6is and am hoping for a fellow enthusiast to check it out for me. I am located in AZ and won't be able to make it out there anytime soon to check it out for myself.

It is a used bmw dealer. Due to their policy, they won't take it to an indy shop for a PPI. They provided me a "lemonsquad" link which is a third party that will come to the car for an inspection which isn't terrible, but these cars have some quirks that only a BMW shop would really know...

So if there is someone with a little free time and wants to check out a cool car and let me know their opinion... I would greatly appreciate that and potentially include a little helper fee in required.

Contact me at: [email protected]

For sure it's not squeaky clean under there. You can see some rust in places under the hood, but for about $7k, you could still drive around looking cool for a few years.

crystalworks 12-15-2022 06:34 PM

$4-5k and I'd rock it. That thing looks like it'll need some immediate attention. Which with me... always snowballs into thousands for parts/upgrades. ;)

Bdc101 12-15-2022 06:48 PM

So these cars are just cheap because they come from places that salt roads? I mean they have to have some major problem at those prices. Especially for that Imola car.

Nolimite39 12-15-2022 06:56 PM

Not necessarily. Check out BaT and C&B. The market for E53s isn't that high. I think an 8k mile 4.8is went for 40k.

AC, electric leader seats, sunroof, radio.

Can't believe someone is asking that much for a car in that condition. I would MAYBE pay $2k. People have to stop watching the news about the used car market. The bottom is about to fall out of it, so be patient out there!

Depends. That's pretty low miles for a car that old. If it has lived in TX it's whole life then it won't be a rust bucket. Looks pretty clean. My only concern would be the valve stem seals and the crossover coolant pipe. Those are probably close to going.

The transmission issue, the multiple oil leaks, the window regulator, etc etc etc. Which equals a potential few thousand $$$. Even if done yourself. Car will sit at that price.

Is a manual trans worth the $5K premium?

RARE 5-SPEED MANUAL 2001 BMW E53 X5 - 242K Miles - $8,500 (Hillside)
https://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto...612402122.html

https://images.craigslist.org/01010_...iP_600x450.jpg

Rare 5-speed manual BMW e53 X5 with many professionally installed extras. I've had this vehicle since 2013 and I am the second owner. Comes with 2 keys and all manuals. Does not have sunroof which is rare and lowers center of gravity, thus making this truck feel like a car. Only one accident, which was with me. I was rear ended, and only damage was to bottom hatch. It has the m54 straight six which runs very smooth and quiet. I've always done my oil changes on time, everytime. Here is a list of features, upgrades and maintenance items.

Video here:https://youtu.be/zCH_d9nvzOM

- Bavarian Auto Performance ignition coils -Clutch fan delete to Electric fan
-Custom intake box with K&N filter
-Rear subframe replaced (common issue) -Brake lines replaced above rear subframe (common issue)
-Brake lines replaced along driver side(common issue)
-Replaced Brake/clutch fluid with ATE DOT4 Type 200
-Recently Replaced all rear end suspension parts
-Replaced 3 of 4 axles.
-H&R Lowering springs and Bilstien sport shocks -700 watt Kicker sound system with integrated subwoofers.
-Electrically adjustable rear seats
-Rear privacy Shades
-Rain sensing wipers
-Auto dimming mirror
-Compass on mirror
-External temperature sensor
-A/C and Heat work perfect
-2-way remote start alarm
-Front and Rear facing Dash Cam
-18-way Sport Driver and Passenger memory seats w/ heat

-18" square wheels from e70 x5 Series(winter wheels) included
-7" Eclipse navigation radio
-Sirius satellite radio w/ Bluetooth and Back-up Camera
-Power Tilt/telescope steering wheel
-HID Projector headlights
-HID Fog lights
-LED Tail lights
-Heated Seats
-Garage door opener

-Rust spot on front passenger fender
-Small rust spot on hood

Nolimite39 04-21-2023 10:48 AM

I feel like that's a fair ask in mint condition and yes the manuals definitely have a higher asking price. I laughed about the lower center of gravity comment. It's a 5k lbs suv, a 100lb sunroof cassette isn't going to make a noticeable difference.

Didn't see the milage, yeah 8500 might be a bit too high for this one. I'd maybe pay 5k

IMHO no, not for a truck that seems to have lived its life where they salt the roads. If there are a couple of visible rust spots you can be guaranteed there are more that aren't visible. Replaced the rear subframe and that's a "common issue"? Not that I've ever heard. The subframe bushings yes, the entire subframe, no. It might be common in NJ because of salted roads in the winter? It looks nice, but I wouldn't pay an extra $5k for it.

I just took mine on a 500 mile road trip last week, and it just needs so much work. Trying to decide if we want to dump a few thousand bucks into repairs (sunroof, subframe bushings, engine mounts, tires, giubos, driveshafts) or just dump it and get something else.

Not me, but I want those wheels. Mine was weirdly optioned: 5MT, DSP, all the goodies, but 17" wheels. They're all oxidized to hell and the tires are cracking. Maybe someone swapped them for better OE ones? Every E53 in the local yards has no wheels so I guess those are the first thing to go...

I found that tool awhile ago
https://burgertuning.com/products/ba...18656362266739, while looking to expand my diagnostic tool set (presently INPA on a Windows 11 ARM64 laptop, a Foxwell NT510 Elite, and an Innova 3100i scan tool); then I noticed that the description had two no-go's for my usage.

First: it states that X5 2002-2012 models are covered...mines an '01.
Second: it states that "The computer that runs Bavarian Technic must meet or exceed the following specifications:
Windows XP, Vista, Win7, 8, 8.1, and 10 (32- or 64-bit versions). MacOS not currently supported.
1.8 GHz Pentium-class, dual-core processor or faster (ARM processor such as on Windows Surface using WinRT not supported)
"...my laptop uses Win 11 (I could probably still get the Bavarian Technic tool to work on Win 11, as I did with INPA), but not sure if I could make the tool accept my laptop's ARM64 processor.

If I had the money to experiment with/throw away on trying the BT tool, it sure looks good to me otherwise. As-is, my next tool purchase will most likely be the Foxwell NT 710 (when and if the NT510 Elite eventually fails).

I recently tried ISTA+ on my ARM64 laptop (won't work, too little available RAM...perhaps someone could PM me a download of the smaller-requirement ISTA-D?). Also looking at BMW Scanner 1.4 (PA Soft), which might be cheaper overall, than the Bavarian Technics tool anyway.

Bought the nearly identical car a few years and 30k miles ago, replaced the head gasket and now drive it daily...

That car would make a great project...and it very likely has no rust...unlike mine.

The M54 E53 takes a head gasket pretty well IMO...Clearance is so good, it stays on its wheels pretty much the whole time.

Somebody should snatch this one up...

If you replace the chain tensioner often enough the chain guides can last 300k+ but 160 is the danger zone if you aren't on number two or three. I'm not aware of the m62 having a problem with VSS under 200 but don't see lots of mention of that high of milage and not having done either.

Nice looking car though wonder what a good value on it is.

1st one I have ever seen in over 23 years since we bought a 3.0 in December of 2000. I thought IT was rare bc of the manual HVAC controls (no premium package) but WITH the sport package. Odd bird.

But this one... *AND* a six speed!? A 2006 six speed? WOW. Feels like it was maybe a military member's import or something. Our '04 4.4 is one of two small sunroof 2004 unicorns I have owned. I really like the smaller roof.

andrewwynn 03-23-2024 12:22 PM

there are further complications than a bad knee; plus, slushbox advantages

Sure, knee replacement is an option, but not always a solution (my father-in-law had to get another one after five years, so I chose not to get mine done). The bad thing is that I'd have to do both (equally wrecked) and I have a great fear of surgery/hospitalization (my family had a history that demonstrated this: "if you go in, you won't come out").

Then there's the sciatica (worse on the left than on the right); it's been (literally) a thorn in my side since the '90's, and our last car with a manual transmission was a '88 Fiero. Only 9 of my 26 cars have been manuals, and the Fiero was the first I'd had since '86.

As for slushboxes, unless you've got a Buick Dynaflow from the fifties (or any crappy CVT tranny, today), then you probably don't appreciate the advantages of an automatic transmission.

  • 1) torque multiplication: ask a grass-roots drag racer why he uses an auto (usually with a high-stall-speed torque converter)...it gives you an advantage leaving the starting line,

  • 2) stop & go traffic: if you've ever been caught in an hour-long traffic jam, usually going under 10 mph, never over 30 mph, you'll appreciate not rowing the gears just to stay in first, most of the time (my daily commute over the last 30+ years before retiremant, made a manual shifter not a favorite),

  • 3) ZF vs GM transmissions: the Craigslist find is a 2006 model, which would've had a ZF automatic, not a GM, as mine does ('01 model); the ZF is more highly regarded than the GM 5L40E (most people online deride it), but mine is a gem (I have no service history for it, but it works as good as any I've had). Look at my signature below to see what automatics I've had (some, but not all are listed), and I've only had 4 automatic transmission problems over 58+ years:

    • a) '86 S-10 200R4 torque converter failed (at 200k miles), & lost the overdrive, and needed repair,

    • b) the B&M torque convertor in the TH350 in my '86 Chevelle, lost the main seal while drag racing, replaced it with another, and put in a shift-kit at the same time,

    • c) the 4L80E in my '04 Chevy 2500HD needed solenoids replaced at 100k miles, and now, at 140k miles, it's starting to slip on takeoff (but not in tow-haul mode), after many years of primarily towing heavy trailers, and

    • d) almost forgot this one: my 16 y.o."friend" shifted my '56 Chevy into reverse on the freeway, back in 1965...it tore up something inside, and his Dad had it repaired (and my "friend" got grounded for six months, back when kids minded their Dads)

As-is, I'm happy with my "slush-boxes" in all five of my current vehicles, YMMV.

Bdc101 04-08-2024 12:20 AM

A 2012 E70 35d popped up on Craigslist in my town for $2,500 with 150k miles and a broken timing chain. Should I do it???

wpoll 04-08-2024 12:36 AM

The later X5 diesel has the timing chain at the rear of the engine so a timing chain replacement is an "engine out" task. The N57 engine has a poor reputation. :-(

Wouldn't "broken timing chain" imply bent valves and smashed pistons?

Timing stuff on the back of an engine is stupid. I thought only VW/Audi was that dumb...

Is it an interference engine?

Using a lift, drop the transmission.

"All this for £850 including VAT for N47 and £950 including VAT for N57 engine. estimated prices."
Really? That cheap? From UKL https://timrevettsprestige.co.uk/bmw...ments-n47-n57/

Bdc101 04-08-2024 08:52 AM

I think it's still the M57 in the USA. I don't think the E70 ever got the N57. That said it does indeed appear to be an interference engine, which means full rebuild or a replacement engine.

Yeah, is see that now...odd. Seems like the US market 35D still got the M57 when the ROTW moved to the N57... which is not a bad thing, since the M57 is (was) a damn fine engine.

Broken cam chain is not a common issue in an M57 but yeah, it’s going to mean the head has to come off.... :(

Bdc101 04-08-2024 09:04 PM

Pistons too -- I assume you'd want to replace pistons if they all got hit by valves. I don't have a ton of experience in that regard but I'd assume for a high-compression diesel engine you wouldn't want a bunch of valve-shaped stress risers in the tops of your pistons. And if you're taking those out you might need to hone the cylinders. I don't know where to stop when you get to that point just because I haven't rebuilt a lot of motors.

andrewwynn 04-08-2024 09:34 PM

Unfamiliar with diesel but on m62 replaced plenty of valves without doing the pistons. 8/32 on one motor.
The pistons already have a dent the shape of the valve couldn't even tell they impacted. Of course when head is off you'd make that judgement call.

Bdc101 04-09-2024 12:18 AM

The gas pistons do but the diesel pistons have a big stratified-charge dent in the very middle of the piston, IIRC. Not shaped with a cutout for the valve IIRC, or not very much. Makes sense too because the diesels are like 17:1 compression or something, so there's much less space in the combustion chamber at top dead center.

Agreed, I think they'd get their asking price if it was too. I doubt they will get $10k for a slushbox, even in that condition.

Might be replicas, or 4 front wheels. Tire size kinda looks the same width on all four.

A bit OT but do any of you good folks make trips between Dallas and Houston on any sort of regular basis. Found an M Performance Exhaust in Dallas for the e90 but the guy won't ship and driving 9 hours round trip is just not in the stars.

andrewwynn 05-04-2024 11:41 AM

I bought a set of mounted tires from eBay from "won't ship" but I hired a company to come to the seller and worked out a deal.

I had to convince seller to box them that was the hardest part.

Awful nice of him to collect it all for one lucky unicorn of a buyer.

andrewwynn 05-04-2024 12:32 PM

No doubt!

One regret when my e53 was totaled I didn't grab the factory hitch gear.

I figured that it wouldn't fit my e70 anyhow but it could have went to somebody on xo. So "sorry whomever that was".

Salty B. 05-04-2024 08:43 PM

Prior owner installed a Westfalia hitch kit in 2020. According to the spreadsheet he gave me it was $450 so probably used/salvaged. Looks exactly like this kit.

I've yet to tow anything with it but probably will this summer when I move to KY. Unsure I want to tow my F30 up and over those mountains in the heat, but a uhaul box trailer should be fine. I'll fly back and drive the F30 up there.

If it helps, I tow a 4,000lb trailer over several mountain passes every summer -- have done it in 100 degree heat climbing up to about 5,500 ft. or so. There's one climb where I have it in third gear at 5,000+ RPM and wide open throttle for 5 or 10 minutes straight just trying to maintain speed, and can't even turn the AC off or the family complains  Honestly I think the manual transmission is better for that kind of stuff because it doesn't have a problem with high temps like an auto does. Make sure to use good oil and change it beforehand, that kind of service probably wears out your oil pretty quick.

One is always too far from me. I do have the next best option to install. I'll be installing it hopefully next month. Cur 5019 hitch.

I’ve got a few in my shed that I don’t know how to dispose of.

Speaking of eBay, a tan drivers side door panel finally popped up for sale, so I grabbed it. My drivers side is in poor shape due to failing glue, dinged up and dirty “pleather” and one shattered fastener anchor/backing (under the “airbag” plug.

Assuming it’s in better shape, or can be repaired and cleaned well enough, I think I’ll swap it with my OE panel, which will then become a project at some point. I’d like to strip it of the non-leather covering and then recover it in new leather, or sensetec, etc. keeping my eyes open for a right front panel to show up on eBay.

I repaired my drivers door after the glue failed from the top plastic that 'hangs' the rest of the door panel. I used Loctite (I think) compound for plastic and fiberglass. I used the whole tube, too. Damn thing isn't going anywhere.
