It's with a sad heart I announce the parting of ways between myself and what might be the current highest mileage E53 on xoutpost :(

Alas, at 388,801 miles on January 24th of 2021, reverse gear disappeared from my GM 5L40-e transmission without a trace of noise, mechanical action or change in engine RPM. All I did was try to back out of a parking space after starting the engine and got zip, zero, nada......

As I observed the deepening crack in the leather of the driver's seat, I said thank you and take a rest and proceeded to find my next X5, a lovely sapphire black 2016 F15 x35i with the luxury trim package :D

And as a bonus, I found a buyer for the 2002 E53  I think he's excited to get the OEM hitch and wiring harness, rust free body and the roof rail cross bars.

Better photos to follow.

x5Alpine 02-02-2021 06:19 PM

damn. If I put that many miles on my E53 I would keep it forever. Nice F15 but I think you might find the E53 is the better car;)

Purplecty 02-02-2021 06:26 PM

RIP! She served you well!

Happy 02-02-2021 06:27 PM

Seems there is a F15 movement here. LoL..

388k! That is 625,714 kms!!! Could this be E53 record? Joined F15 club 10 days ago. Must be the water.

Zulu95 02-02-2021 06:40 PM

I joined the F15 clan (Der Adler) some months ago after parting with the E53 we owned for 16 years.
OP: I almost bought a F15 from Sewell but could not get the deal I wanted.
I like Der Adler but miss the old girl.

I definitely prefer the E53 steering feel on the highway and like its center console lid more than the clamshell on the F15, but the F15 is delivering 20% better fuel mileage :wow:

I've been watching the F15 forum for some time now and have been pleased with the lack of issues owners have had with them compared to the F70 model, so we'll see what happens. Felt lucky to get another Texas only vehicle though with all service performed at a local dealership.

Overboost 02-02-2021 07:01 PM

We will miss you over here Steve. Make sure to check in from time to time and let us know how the new F15 is doing. She looks fine!

Sorry to see you go. :(

upallnight 02-02-2021 07:05 PM

That's about a $200.00 DIY repair. You can have a trans shop install the Sonnax kits into the valve body if you don't want to buy the tool to ream the valve body for the new bushings.

x5Alpine 02-02-2021 08:21 PM

I understand...... I drive different cars all of the time thinking to replace the E53 but the F15 and G05 X5’s just don’t do it for me each time I test drive one between the steering feel to the interior materials. I definitely have the oldest car in the neighborhood but I love the E53 along with my E39 M5 and will keep them forever as the E53 isn’t worth selling from how much it’s worth and how much I’ve put into it to make it next to perfect.

*sheds a tear as he gets ready to repair his 17yr old, 340,000km rear end*

Enjoy the new ride!

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Happy 02-02-2021 08:34 PM

I am one of the oldest on the block as well. But, best believe they hear me when I pull up! E53 E39 E46 all day!

@srmmmm brought up in a recent thread that considering all the original plastic and rubber parts Not to mention the hundreds of connectors housing thousands of contacts, that he would likely upgrade when a big ticket item hit.

You recently made the same move off e53 and far as I know it was in need of $0 of repairs. (lucky buyer)

I don't fall in love with a car(s) except my two Lotus.

This is one of the reasons why I'm keeping my two Europa.

Not bad for a $1,000 and $3500 investment.

It's like buying NIO at the beginning of 2020 for around $2.00 a share.

I love but not in-love. My BMWЯ gets totaled I'll get a BMWЯ the sequel. The X5 chose me I'm in for life.

I know it's a simple part, and not that difficult a job to perform, but the escalation factor is too large with that many miles on the transmission. I have a buyer coming in from Wichita Falls and will see what his plans are for it since it just got tires, catalytic convertors and new O2 sensors in the past 6 months.

Don't worry OB, I'm X5 and Xoutpost for life. As perfectly sized as the E53 was, the F15 fits just as well and the extra cargo space in the back is nice to have.

Most importantly, it has CEO approval

You may want to refer him to this thread.

Absolutely. I plan on convincing him to become a member if he isn't already. There's too much knowledge and experience in this group to not take advantage of and participate in. I've always been amazed at the scope of the repairs some of you guys are willing to undertake.

Because the X doesn't go into reverse he may lowball you but you can tell him that it's just a 200 diy fix to get a running X.

Fifty150hs 02-03-2021 11:57 AM

I've been chasing your mileage. I have 257,000 on the clock and am shooting for 300,000. I'll evaluate what I do when I hit 300. If I can't figure out the current problem my e53 may not stay around long enough though. :pullhair:

RocketyMan 02-03-2021 12:06 PM

I'm always amazed seeing a "running" picture of a E53/E46 clusters with no telltale lights on in the dash. Woah!

I'm always amazed seeing them WITH lights. I don't know how anyone drives a car with a warning light on in the cluster. Would drive me absolutely batty.

Was pleased to make a deal with him at $1200 for it. Covers the cost of the spare tire kit (don't want to be stuck having to purchase run-flats) and OEM hitch on the F15.

Good luck with your new to you X5! Is it a lifetime Texas vehicle?

Yes it is BC. Sold and serviced by Sewell BMW in Grapevine since birth. I thought their selling price was fair and have been very impressed with the purchasing process and their follow-up. As I mentioned in another post, I've been watching the F15 forum for a while and that model seems to be very reliable. I know my wife's (excuse me, my CEO) 2014 F32 has only needed a steering angle sensor in 75,000 miles with no other repairs, so I think the "Twin Power" 8-speed ZF drive train is pretty solid.

I'll pay a little bit more attention to oil change intervals and the cooling system, but hope to roll this one another 300,000 miles as well.

skeetjunkie 02-03-2021 03:12 PM

Drove my 2006 for well over a 100K miles, and traded in an F15 3.5i last year. Absolutely love it as much as the E53. Great car. Keeper for at least 200K.

Dood! lol! I was going to respond with a meme...screw it..here it is. "Customers" was replaced with a different non-PC word. hehehee.

Part of the reason why I love BMWs is because of the amount of in-depth support that exists. INPA, NCS, Rheingold, etc.

That's great. I see posts of snow country X5s undersides and cringe. Underside of my 4.6 still looks newish. Haven't had any seized fasteners. I lived in Michigan for many years. Hated what the salt did to my cars.

I have a longterm relationship with Classic, They are much closer to me. I have heard good things about Sewell. Classic was giving me a parts discount but not anymore. Does Sewell offer discount for you?

We're rooting for you. Was always inspiring seeing the mileage on your E53.

motordavid 02-04-2021 08:53 AM

Your E53 had a helluva run!
That may be the HighMileage E53...a long time poster here, TheChairman, still has his ol'X with high 300,000 miles; not sure of his current mileage.

Hope your next X serves you well!

I think with foxwell it's possible to change the oil change interval. Having the dot turn red is a very solid method to keep you on top of regular changes.
