'03 X5 (3.0) radio control unit location

Sorry for such an ignorant question, but, where is my radio control unit? I've searched the web and here and not finding it. I assume it's in the "trunk" area, side panel, but, ...just trying to get my ducks in a row trying to solve why I have no more music :-(

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Which radio do you have?

If it's the NAV, the control unit is in the trunk under the spare tire, rear of the battery.

if it's the MID, the control unit is in the dash - it's the CD or cassette unit above the MID.

Factory Navigation is equipped with the tuner in the rear. If you have the Mid/CD in the dash, the CD has the tuner in it.

No Nav, has CD above MID - so it sounds like the control unit is in the dash too? It's actually my son's rig and I'm just helping. Do you just dig in behind the MID once removed?

Thank you.

Ah. So from what you and Carylon said, it's in the dash - and part of the CD unit?

Yes sir. You will find the radio antenna cable plugged into the CD unit.

Does your X5 have DSP? Tell us what is wrong besides no sound.
Start by checking fuses.

Could be the amp in the left rear cubby of the trunk is shorted due to water infiltration.

So I finally got a replacement CD with radio unit and swapped it in and the issue actually got worse. With the old CD/radio, when I first start the X5 the radio comes on for almost exactly 60 seconds and then cuts out. Now it doesn't even come on.

Any thoughts? Could a bad amp be the issue? I've checked fuses and they look good, though if someone could list off the ones that are 'integrated' into the radio, that would be awesome.

Thank you.

Jay

You need to determine if the speakers are connected directly to the CD player (like mine are) or if your car has a secondary amp in the trunk (like most USA cars). The secondary amp will be in the trunk, usually in the rear left cubby, below floor level.
