Leaking Windshield- Computer Woes
 

So I have just been enjoying my X5, no problems, running great. Too good to be true!


I had a new windshield installed at a reputable shop, and left the car parked outside for a few days, no need to use it for a couple weeks. I noticed the windshield quite frosted the other morning, noticing that it was inside the car. On entering, there was ice on the Weathertec drivers side mat. On turning the ignition key. dash lights lit briefly, no click and then nothing.



Further checking and I found clear signs of water having soaked the lower left portion of the dash panel where it faces the door panel.


WTF am I looking at here? Thanks for what I am expecting to be not so good news.....

I think the EWS module is down there and if it was waterlogged it will give you the symptoms you are describing

So after a thorough drying out and fully recharging the battery, it starts and runs fine- No apparent problems with any of the electronics. Very relieved about that!


My problem now goes back to the entry of water. As mentioned earlier, the windshield was replaced 5 or 6 weeks ago. I park on a level surface outdoors. Snow is always cleared off of the car, never allowed to remain and melt. We did have a driving rain during the time it has been parked. All windows were up, and I am confident no leaks originate there. I replaced an interior door seal last year to ensure no leaks.


The water seemed to pool in the drivers footwell, and heating/cooling while parked outside seems to have allowed the water to wick through the vehicle- It was quite wet in the battery compartment.


I never use the sunroof. I am thinking the windshield was improperly sealed, but could there be a related issue allowing water in, primarily on the drivers side?

Water in the footwell of the left side is almost always from the sun roof drain getting plugged. Search for a thread on how to unplug it.

Just a thought, but what about something like this after getting the kinks out?

And water in the battery compartment is usually rear drains or taillight seals. You might have multiple sources to find op.

With that amount of water, you can do some testing to find the exact spot.

For the sunroof, open the roof, and pour water (I just used a water bottle) down the side channels. Obviously, pour somewhat slowly so the water doesn't overflow into the car! If these are working correctly, you'll very clearly see a stream of water pouring out underneath the car (below where the A-pillars end).

Do the same thing at the four corners of the windshield. And maybe at the points where the roof rails attach to the car.

I wouldn't suspect the door seals (or side windows) per your description. I've found these just end with damp carpeting. But these can be tested by spraying down the sides of the car with a garden hose at full blast.

Did you replce the seal at the top of the windshield ? Part# 51317182004?
It goes along the top of the windshield. Mine had deteriorated and was causing a leak.

Otherwise remove both front A-pillar interior trims and see if your front sunroof drains are kinked. These and door vapor barriers are the most common source of leaks

Will that seal cause a leak? I have been told conflicting answer on this. The shop did not replace the deteriorating seal. I was going to order and they claimed it shouldn't affect leakage.

The outer trim is not the weather seal but if the internal seal fails the outer trim can act as a seal
