Center resonator options
Mine is on its way out. I'll JB weld the seam leaks to buy some time, but need some advice on options.
Details - It's a 2004 4.4 with the 4.8 exhaust on it. From what I can tell the resonator (and I would assume the cats) are all from a 4.8. The PO put that and the 4.8 trim on it. Part number on the resonator is 1810 7531830-03 (Zeuna Starker 204 8629 018). - I tow sleds in the winter and my track car in the warmer months, so I need the performance to be maintained or better (no torque drop mid-range). Options 1. Supersprint https://www.ecstuning.com/b-superspr...onator/789103/ 2. Magnflow https://www.magnaflow.com/products/1...eel-tru-x-pipe 3. Find a used 4.8 replacement Anyone have similar installs to either 1 or 2? Thanks in advance! |
Bump. Anyone with a 4.4, modified centre resonator (after market, x-pipe, etc) and 4.8 rear mufflers that tows? Insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
|
I'm getting a magnflow tru-x pipe installed next week. Stay tuned.

Tuned in.

I want to remove the resonator on my 4.8 but will likely be awhile before it happens. Other projects keep pushing modding the 4.8 back.

Got the Tru-X Pipe installed. I like it.
https://youtu.be/1xLKoM-Jbbs https://youtu.be/GGJt9tESpZI It goes in for body work this weekend, Tire balance next week and deep detailing a few weeks later. |

I like that, sounds good  It's on my list of things to do as well, right after I get the "needs to be done" things finished :D |
Anyone upgraded a 3.0i with an X-pipe instead of the center resonator?
After putting an intake and a 4.6iS exhaust on my 3.0i, I am left wanting for more noise. |

Update. Low end torque is definitely affected. The transmission will upshift too early. Rev it up past 3K and no issues and it winds out nice. I'm debating doing an adaptation reset so maybe the trans will learn the new lack-of-back-pressure setup. Thoughts? Anyone else reset after the x-pipe install?
Thanks! |

Dude, that sucks, whats curious though is there are a number of guys who run the x-pipe and I know they're "higher rpm power" setup but I've never heard anyone complain of any significant torque loss? Just no low end guts anymore? Hmmm, maybe I go with an h-pipe then :D |
It's noticeable, more so in automatic than when you row through the gears and keep the revs higher. I'll see how it does when I tow the track car. There is the slipping/surging in manual second gear that I have to get to the bottom of too. Maybe after that's sorted I'll reset adaptations and see what happens.

Any news since towing? Still so stranger, so many guys have done this and been tickled pink that I still think there has yo be a "smoking gun here". I say, I do know the X pipe is a "makes power on the higher end of the rpm range", but I've never heard of it seriously impacting low end. Silly question, but any codes, check engine light, etc? maybe the better scavenging of the X pipe high lighted a rich \ lean problem? Worst case pull the X pipe ad replace it with an H pipe, will change the tone a bit lower and H pipes are "known" to enhance torque at lower rpms. |
I won't tow the car until later in the month or August - tracks just opened up in Ontario and my car is buried in a garage at a farm. No codes, lights, etc. I do have the transfer case actuator gear near dead, so that will get fixed this week. The slipping in second gear manual mode may or may not be tied to that, but there are no codes with transmission either. Some error in the VTG but it just tells me there is a fault but won't tell me what exactly it is. I'm getting the transmission looked at Wednesday. If I end up doing a bunch to it, I'll reset adaptations and see if that helps. Worse case, if I can't tow well with it (and as you said) switch to an H-pipe. If you beat on it and wind it out, you're past the low range really quick and live in the higher rpm zones anyways.

Sounds good, keep us posted what you find out. I'd say if I get my h-pipe installed I'll report back... but mine is still more a a "would like to" and hasn't moved into the line of "will be dones" yet - LoL..., I'm still working on suspension, wheels, tires and arch flares, it's never ending! |

Fifty - freeway (or highway as we say up here :) ) is fine. If you lay into it you can barely hear it. These things are well insulated. If you drive behind it though you can definitely hear the rasp, but it's fine IMO.
As for towing, I towed the track car without issues. I kept it at around 120km/h, 5th gear, which had it around 3,000rpm. That seemed fine and where I tended to tow anyways. Anything lower than about 2,800rpm and it was pretty sucky, but I'm towing about 4,500# so I'd normally keep it 2,800+. Final verdict - it's staying as is. I think my wife, although she hates it (or maybe it's me she hates for putting it on...), will survive. |
