Same same on diesels, OB! :yikes:

Smoke on start-up only is trickier to figure. I was going suggest a leaky injector or two but it could really be a many things. :dunno:

Listening to the third video posted by grounch (revving after 5 min warm-up), the turbo sounds pretty good - I can hear it but it's pretty quiet for only 5 mins of warm-up. Don't think this will be a turbo issue, more likely something from the cylinders (oil or fuel, which is well... damn near oil  ).

But that first video, yeah, that is a LOT of white smoke...

I ordered all new filters and the pcv valve, will se if the smoke goes away after changing all that. Hopefully..

What could be an obvious sign of a worn out turbo? Lack of power, smoke at any rev?
Had a car with headlights on behind me, floored it and saw a light smoke happening there. Not that kind of cloud but something thin. Couldn't go smell it tho..

Sounds normal, espeically with no DPF...

I doubt the engine breather and filters will change the white smoke on start-up but they are worth changing anyway, if you don't know the car's service history.

So today i had a good smell of the startup smoke, and it didn't smelled like oil at all to me. More like some diesely odor.
About the breather i had a feedback from a friend who had a similar smoke issue, changed it and it really reduced the smoke amount. Will see, can't hurt anyways..
The oil looks a bit old and overfilled, dipstick above max when measuring cold.

Little update about this case.
Changed the oil, the pcv valve and the air filter. Both looked not that old, can't say the same about the oil.
Now i have no more smoke at cold start.
But the weather also got warmer, so idk if we really can talk about cold start..
Maybe it's more temperature related than caused by those filters.

For those who will go through this topic and search the solution, here it is.
So it was temperature related, and more precisely glow plugs related.
Cold temp = need plugs to reach normal combustion temp = smoke if not reached.
Warm temp = all fine.
Changed the glow plugs control unit (not the easiest job..) and looks like no more smoke at cold start.
The glow plug error codes also went out (5/6 were faulty) and the drive feels a bit more smooth when cold.

Thanks for the follow-up and the fix - good to know.

Many folk seem to disregard the glow-plugs and controller, thinking they are non-critical parts but they have a significant roll to play in the correct operation of these engines.

Thanks that’s exactly my problem at startup but less smoke. I have 4/6 glow plug errors and a MAF error code. My turbo is also leaking some oil onto intercooler so seems I have additional issues. I’ve changed oil engine breather and air filter so now for 6 glow plugs and controller.
Then will attack turbo issue as it could be breather related.
I’ve also got a leaking gearbox …
