2004 X5 3.0 audio (hifi) system not working.. any help appreciated

Hey all,

Figured I would introduce myself to this forum with my first issue on this X5, I just bought.

I am trying to install a replacement MID unit or preferably an Android head unit but am having trouble getting sound.

This car is non nav / non dsp and has the HiFi standard system amp in the back turnk and is also set up for a CD changer/Phone :

S639 Preparation F Mobile Phone Cpl. USA/CDN
S645 BMW US Radio
S650 CD Drive
S661 Radio BMW Business (C43)
S676 HiFi Speaker System
S692 Preparation, BMW 6-CD Changer I-Bus

I bought this car and the original Multi Unit turned on but had no sound and the pixels were mostly dead. I took it out and replaced it with a AVIN Android Unit and assumed it would be plug and play as my unit did not have DSP / NAV. When I did install (just the 40 pin plug), the sound was working the first day (with a giant buzz on the rear driver side speaker) but it was working.

The next day, the system turned on but I had no sound or buzzing. I tried another android unit (Seicane) and same thing, no sound. I finally tried an OEM Multi Unit that I bought and tried plugging that in, but it won't even power on (same now with my old broken one).

I am assuming that my rear amp is fried but wanted to check with anyone here if that is likely the case. Is it my understanding that the rear amp powers the speakers and the android headunit that connects to the 40PIN is just connecting to the amp in the rear.

Also would love to get feedback on what my best options are:

1.) Replace OEM AMP 65128379376 - Easiest Method, but will this be enough to power an android unit? I am not too concerned about sound quality.

2.) Replace Aftermarket - Assuming this would be a much more complex method and would require a professional; however, is this worth the effort as I do see cheaper new Alpine Amps.

3.) Do they android units have a built in amp and is that why my sound was working for a day?

4.) What could the reason be why my oem Multi Units won't even turn on? Are they locked until I reset my batter?

Notably looking for help from @Crowz who I have been reading posts on.

Thanks all for the help.

Will

Likely a failed HiFi amp. Have you pulled it and taken a look? The radio will get power from the vehicle and power on regardless of a working amp. Have you checked the fuses? Sounds obvious, but it happens. Especially with 3 (technically 4) fuse boxes. But the 2 to be most concerned with are in the glove box and the right hand side cubby.

If all fuses are good, likely the amp. They are prone to failure. If you aren't particular about sound, easiest thing to do is replace the HiFi amp. The android does have a built in amp, but it's probably 10 watts rms x 4 at best and would be a huge task to rewire to bypass the factory amp.

As to why the oe mids aren't powering on... No idea. Could be many things.

Hi, if you need a replacement amp i am about to remove mine this weekend. it has 1 plug on it. I had the Nav/ Non DSP system. so the AMP has 1 plug. can take pics if needed.

I am in process of installing new speakers with new amp for better sound quality.

PM for price (will sell for cheap) if interested

Replaced the amp but still no sound. All the fuses were tested to be ok (although one fuse in the back has a 7.5amp fuse when it should be a 5’ amp fuse.

The old amp did have corrosion and so does the amp connector. Is it possible that the amp connector is defective now? How can I tell and / or replace?

I did find that this was due to water going in the trunk area (clogged drain)..
Could this have done damage to another area? Taillight and all other non stereo electrical work fine.

This silent car is killing me!!

Could be that the corrosion in the harness/plug is causing a problem. Clean it with deoxit or some other electronics cleaner if you want to try to save it. At the shop I was at we would cut out as much was damaged and solder in a good used harness. That's if we even took the job because warranting water damaged electronics work can be a pain.

You have any pictures of the corrosion?

Hi there.. in my ‘06 E53 3.0 my son complained of no sound from any speakers.

I told him he was playing the music too loud..

I have had an Xtrons android unit installed for 18 months or so. Other than no sound, it seemed to be functioning fine..

I checked fuses front and back. Swapped audio relays. no difference.
Then I pulled the connector to the amp and found a bunch of corrosion and evidence of several burnt pins on the amp side of connector.

The amp was original. Alpine - made in China in ‘05.

I got lucky and found a new unused, old stock OEM amp from 2010 on eBay.
Plugged it in and am back in business.

It looks to me like Alpine switched production from Mexico to China in ‘02 or so..Don’t know if the early Mexico units are better.

I can’t complain too much, it lasted 15 yrs..

I have a lightly used (3-4 months) Avin Avant 4 Android head unit from my e53 for sale. If interested, PM me.
