pano roof, again!
Hey everyone. My pano roof broke a long time ago and I finally mustered enough courage to replace it today. I didn't buy the repair kit because I'm by myself and of all the videos I watched, i don't think I can figure it out in a timely enough manner.
Anyway, I am writing because I would like help finding the seals I need to replace! I cannot figure out which ones I need. |
Mine was "broken" when I bought my 04' X5. Found this on Youtube and it fixed it. I have a fully functioning pano minus the rear "vent" feature.

Miloh, are you talking about the rubber trim along the sunroof?

I’m prepping for this as well. An ‘04 I bought has the leading edge of rubber on the rear glass pulled off (and repeatedly jamming) on both sides, but still adhered in the center. It *looks* like #54137127565 from my research, but REALOEM is somehow vague about what exists for this rubber strip. My order for this part ships out on the 14th and I will report back with IF that indeed is the leading-edge rubber. What I need buffers between the two glass panels when closed. |
I got mine at europarts. Only $80 and you have to trim it in order to fit

I’d go to the junkyards and find a whole cassette and replace. Forgot rebuilding. Installing is not the hard and you can do it yourself. You do look like a dying cockroach while you’re putting it in, but it gets the job done.

My fear with finding installing a used sunroof is I would be afraid it would fail shortly after I installed.
Do the parts in the rebuild kits not fix the parts that are weak/fail on these? Wouldn't that get you all new mechanisms? https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=54_0323 |

Are the two hex bolts the most rear ones? Mine X5 pano works but I wouldn't mind preventing a future failure. The front pano roof if big enough. I spent a good amount of time lubricating all the moving parts a few weeks ago.
|
Two hex bolts on each sides of rear pane - one easy to see, other is a little hidden by the back of the front pane
|
If that's the route you want to go, then at least cushion it, otherwise it'll rattle like hell.
|
Oh!?!? Where does it need to be cushioned? Any links or pics? I guess I can use it until it fails. At least I know how to close with info from this forum.

Back in 2018 I bought a 06 X5 with the pano roof. *In 2019 got in an accident and the car wasn’t damaged too bad but it tweaked the frame. *I then bought a 05 X5 that was like brand new except the pano roof would open in the vent position but then the back half would not close. I had to physically force it to close.* Looking into it I *found a lot of broken plastic pieces in the track and so forth. I watched the YouTube videos on how to repair it. I was still kind of lost on it so I decided to take the cartridge out of my 06 and put it into my 05. I did it by myself and at first I was really hesitant because I had to take the headliner out without damaging it. The Bentley shop manual does not have a section on replacing the cartridge. I figured since my 06 is now a parts car I figured I would take the cartridge out of that one first so I can learn how to do it. I found it easy to take out so I took the one out of my 05 and switch them it works beautifully and there’s no leaks. Wondering how I was going to support this while I unbolted the cartridge from the roof without having it fall down onto the seats I took a heavy duty rubber bungee cord and hooked it to the sheet metal of the roof from side to side under the front portion of the cartridge *then proceeded to unscrew the bolts and let the front of the cartridge rest on the bungee cord *and the back of the cartridge rest on the backrest of the back seat with a towel in between.* Then just going from front to back I let the back half of the cartridge rest on the tailgate (in the closed position) and the front half was them resting on the covered backrest of the back seat. I used a rubber bungee cord so I could have that movement to slide the cartridge back and yet still be supported by the front and then proceeded to lift up the front of the cartridge moved to bungee cord and let it sit on the backrest of the seats. *You could of course go to a junkyard and pick up the whole cartridge from another one and just replace it. Although it does involve more work you could do it in a day at least that's how long it took me to do mine and I had no instructions to follow on how to replace the cartridge. *Don't know if this helps you but just thought I'd share my experience with you

If you are looking at total glass removal, then there will be a second torx screw per side as well. athttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3aa24c0b2b.jpg Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |

Okay you are correct that screw in the middle is one of them there is also a second one which is going to be to the front of the back panel so you have a total of four screws on each panel two on each side. The scre2s on the front you need to pull down the plastic rain gutter in between the two glass panels and that will allow a little bit more room to get your I believe it's a number 20 torx bit which is inserted into a quarter inch quarter drive socket with a long extension and then to the ratchet. What you want to do is tape the torx bit into the socket and the socket onto the extension just so it doesn't fall out while you're up in there because it's a pain in the butt to retrieve the screw or the torx bit and there's no room for your hands or your fingers really. If I knew how to send a picture back to you I would I don't know how to send pictures on this website yet. But I'm still working on that one yeah so there are two screws per side per glass and if you ever do change the whole the cartridge the whole unit do it with the glass panels in because if you take the panels out and put it in yes it's lighter but then to put the panels in and any other joining parts it's rather difficult with the roof half over where you're working and I found that out the hard way. I will keep working on that picture to send it back to you and I hope this answers your question let me know okay.
Oh I almost forgot one other thing when you put the glass back in you want the thickness of a credit card between the two panels. Seriously, it works 4 When you install the back panel . |
Thanks lost puppy.
Can anyone confirm for the panoramic headliner if 51437194187 is the right part # for the clips? It looks like the only option but shows it’s only in the back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
You're welcome Miloh.
As to your question about the part number for the headliner clips. I would call Teresa she is at Crevier BMW at the parts counter here in Santa Ana, California, and the phone number there is 657-213-3493. If you do call ask for her specifically she has helped me on a number of items and takes the time to go into detail with me about my X5. So far one of the best I found in parts for BMW |
Here’s an update:
I finally had time to pull the headliner and reveal the panoramic cartridge. Clockwork (thanks!) sent me a replacement seal, and I got a replacement cartridge in the mail about a month ago. My headliner was full of leaves and debris from the two times it definitely flooded up there. As well, the headliner showed some water stains around the moonroof hole. I will also be recovering the headliner with new material, using 3M Super Yellow Trim Adhesive (08090). I bought eBay fabric, enough to do the sunroof panels also and hopefully enough to do the pillars - transitioning from gray to black. I gotta say, everything was going swimmingly yesterday. I found the lower tailgate top part with reflectors needs replacing cause it creaks like crazy, the trunk D pillars have broken tabs on them, and I think I disconnected and reconnected the battery like 7 times. I expected nothing less from this monstrosity. I got really upset because for the last 5 years the cloth sunroof cover would not close completely, it would only retract. None of the guys at the shop I go to could get it to close, lol. So when it was 3:00-4:00PM during summer I would be blinded by a 4 inch gap letting sun hit my eyes. And yesterday I got it to close. Anyway, I found I cannot tilt my currently installed sunroof. Does reinitializing it fix that? Is it ok to do that if it completely opens and closes the glass but the cover sticks occasionally when closing? I press vent and it pulls the glass forward from closed but won’t open it, and won’t open it when the cloth covers are closed. It does make the covers split. I believe I need to vent it to remove the glass panels and then to remove the cartridge, correct? Can I remove the glass panels without venting it? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Ooh never mind. Ya boy got it replaced and working. I didn’t get the glass seated perfectly, it makes a nice clunk noise anytime it closes from the vent position. But it works, initialization worked. Muy bien.
Thank you Clockwork for the seal! It needed it for sure. If anyone has input on seating the glass, that would be really helpful and much appreciated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
