Transfer Case Actuator Replaced

Hi All,

Recently I replaced the Transfer Case Actuator as I had the Trifecta pf lights (and a mechanic told me it was the Actuator).

However the lights remain on.

I have cleared the codes using a C310+, but as soon as I start the car, the three lights come back on.

I read on this forum that I need to re-set the car for th enew resistor, but can't find anything on how to do this.

I also have the IPNA software running on a virtual machine on my laptop, and 3 OBD II cables, but when I try to use the software, I get a communication error?

How can I re-set the car to accept the new Actuator?

JG

What error comes back? You need to confirm you didn't pick up a different fault that was masked from the actuator

Actuator replaced but you said recognize the resistor.

Did you put in a new classification resistor also? They are specifically paired by an acceptable range and can't be swapped willy-nilly (another don't ask what I did[emoji28])

Does the classification resistor pair with the transfer case or actuator?

What is a Classification Resistor? Is that part of the Actuator (the circuit board between the gear and the motor)?

With the transfer case

Yeah, found out what it is.

We re-used the one from the original Actuator.

Just replaced the whole actuator (Motor, circuit board and gear). It did not come with a resistor.

Do I need to change that also?
The error code is something about the resistor being faulty, but I thought that was because we had changed the Actuator.

The seller (on eBay) said "After installation you need to have it taught."

Not sure wehat that means.

This is the Classification Resistor https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...52a426af60.jpg

Yes, I figured out what the Classification Resistor is.

Now my question is how to get the car to accept the new Actuator?

Do I need to change the Classification Resistor?

Again, how do I get the car to accept the new Classification Resistor?

EODguy 06-24-2021 08:11 AM

Have you pulled the battery cables off and waited a few minutes to help clear codes?

If not start there, then if you've changed your transfer case oil do a oil service reset and scan again.

Have you driven the car since you changed the actuator?

If everything is working as it should the lights would clear within a very short distance driving.

andrewwynn 06-24-2021 10:37 AM

Wash he said: you do have to drive to reset trifecta.

Is brake light red? Can mean TC oil wear.

Caryalon 06-24-2021 09:48 PM

I used the Autel Maxisys scanner to do this.

Yes, we have driven the car quite a bit. No change to trifecta.

Yes, brake light is red. I haver not noticed is any other colour.

4X4 light is orange, Brake light is red and ABS light is orangs.

All three have been these colours for some six months now (with the Actuator replaced about 4 months ago).

Which model is the scanner?

And what are the steps?

Please give a detailed step-by-step guide.

andrewwynn 06-25-2021 11:00 AM

310 is a reasonable scanner but is it bidirectional?

Foxwell 5x0 will reset TC.

What are the actual errors?

X5chemist 06-27-2021 09:15 AM

Was the transfer case actuator new or used? A used one probably has a bad gear in it too. Open up the old one.

It's an Autel MS908P. I don't have it with me. I can look tomorrow.

Yes, 310 is Bidirectional (clears codes).

Error codes are

54C8 - Classification Resistor
5463 - Mechanism Faulty

Actuator is new. eBay supply.

By directional means that you can activate things such as turn the blower motor on.

X5chemist 06-29-2021 07:29 AM

Mine had codes 54C6, 55C4, 5463, and 5F39 when I bought it. All of them cleared with a gear replacement. Check the connection carefully. Is the mechanism seated correctly?

c-bass 06-29-2021 11:43 AM

is it an OEM actuator you bought off ebay or an "aftermarket"?

I'm starting to think it might not be working

andrewwynn 06-29-2021 11:57 AM

When I had similar problems with client 328xi i left the actuator plugged in but not installed so I could actuate with the scanner and confirm it was working.
It was working.

His case the TC internals were fried but he ran the TC dry of oil due to front seal failure.

Feels like the problem is the resistor.

Jughead028 08-08-2021 10:49 PM

Ok. Put in a new Classification Resistor
.

How do I get the car to recognise it?

Questions:

What scanned do I use?

What are the steps when using this scanner?

Thanks,

JG

andrewwynn 08-09-2021 10:30 AM

I believe the foxwell scanner can do it. EOD had to replace his and that's the scanner he uses.

EODguy 08-09-2021 12:24 PM

Go to service section and check the VTG (I think it was) Live Data.

If your classification resistor is correct it will show a "registered" and "actual" set to (H) under maintenance if neither was shown.

The steps are shown in the above menu.

I have access to a MaxiCom MK808bt scanner. Can this be done with that scanner?

If so, what are the steps?

X5chemist 08-10-2021 02:23 PM

Have you driven it? On mine, the lights may come on if the battery goes too low. All I do it drive it. It relearns the transfer case actuator. I can clear the codes but the 4X4 light stays on. It goes away once it moves. I guess the memory gives a code if no data is stored.

andrewwynn 08-10-2021 04:46 PM

Abs and related usually the light stays on until you drive after reset codes.

Yes, we drive the car every day.
