I would weigh the old and new pump to try to get an idea of how many grams are missing.

I checked my notes and see I put in a Salieri (not Genuine BMW branded) pump in when I did my HG work a few years ago. Hope mine is OK. I'll remember to keep that in mind. I did save the perfectly functioning one I took out.

On the plastic debris, this may be a dumb question, but does the plastic float or sink? Same answer for coolant and for water? That will probably affect the best way to remove debris.

- Re flushing, you can always put the car in neutral and push it out of the garage for flushing. Of course, you need to be careful with helpers to push the car.

Saleri is OE, BMW badge ground off type of stuff. I'm looking at the old "Saleri" pump vs. the new Saleri I got at napa. there is no way the old one was genuine Saleri - even though I have the invoice from FCP that says it was. the markings are completely different and the impeller is VASTLY inferior plastic. It's 'bendy'. The composite stuff on the Saleri feels like steel. So, apparently FCP sent me something else 2 years ago and I just assumed it would be legit :hammer:

I'm not happy with them right now. Placed a HUGE order on Wednesday with $20 overnight shipping after verifying 2pm EST cutoff for same day shipping on support chat with "Jess". Well it didn't go out same day after all. It went out Thursday along with another overnight package I had to order on Thursday. I was staging all this stuff to work the next three days to finish up this cyl head.

Well, the 2nd package I ordered with 3 small things in it is now here. The first package...will be here Tuesday. 6 days for overnight express shipping. completely blew up my weekend and has caused a MAJOR inconvenience. Both those packages left on Thursday, traveled togehter, were scanned within 2 minutes of each other at the local distribution center. Somebody put the smalll one on the truck, but not the big one that I really needed. THAT's an eff-up. Got nothing to do with Covid et al. It's somebody slacking a$$.

My FedEx distribution center will let me go pick up a Monday package on Saturday. If the local distributor is open on Saturday you might be abke to do the same.

I'll have to check that out.

on another note: I was vacuuming the junk out of the coolant channels on the block with my fluid extractor (actually worked quite well). they are all dry now. there wasn't a ton of junk or oil in there. only some drizzling from when the head came off. not too worried about that. antifreeze has some pretty incredible cleaning power, lol!

I was inspecting with a light and saw a decent side chunk of water pump impeller about index fingernail size.

I sucked it to the tip of the extractor tube. I carefully raised it up and it jammed in the opening at the top and fell back down. Now I don't see it.

I'm trying to understand the path of water flow here. Those chunks do not float so I am wondering how much trouble I want to go through trying to find them.

so far it's migrated from the water pump, up into the head, and down into the cylinder jackets. If I understand the flow correctly. no way to know if it will just stay down there. trying to figure out a way to use compressed air or similar to "sweep up" any remaining pieces.

i'm wondering if this diagram is entirely correct. I can shine a light into one cooling channel and see everything in the adjoining jacket on the same cylinder but no light anywhere else. this makes it look like the cylinder cooling jackets are joined for the entire length of the block.

I think i'll get a pitcher and pour some water in there coolant jackets and just watch where it goes.

from this, it looks like the could potentially get pushed up into the cylinder head jackets and jam there. that wouldn't be good.

Logically pressurized water reverse flow would push it back to the water pump discharge side.

Back in the early 80's (high school) I worked at Western Auto and they sold a flush kit with about 10 different sized rubber cones with metal tubes in each for flushing blocks (made for freeze plug holes) if that kit is still being made it's your best bet on getting a good flush done, although you have to cut the threaded end off your garden hose to use it....
