x5 e53 rear suspension... upgrade
Hey Guys
so my x5 e53 3.0d is starting to sink giving it the classic e30 bent wheels look......... i am gonna replace the rear air suspension.. want to do a upgrade rather then just replace.... any reccommendations seen sports upgrade does anyone know where i can get them from... loads of crap on ebay. |
If you are referring to the excessive camber, that is almost exclusively from two parts wearing out: the ball joint and the rear control arm. (BMW calls the wishbone).
Those are usually the only parts needed to replace to get camber back under control. The more significant problem is that the rear wheels will toe out on braking which is what causes the extreme tire wear not negative camber as people erroneously think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
Yep, toe out is much worse for tires. I'm running -35mm vogtland's and rear right is -2.18 degrees. Not bad, but would be nice to get it better. I will probably modify the original bolt and adjustment to make it little bit better.
I just fixed the loose end's from the rear. Rear upper control arm's were shot and also the lower ball joint. Basic E53/E38/E39 stuff. :D |

I was surprised how bad the rear ball joints had become once we unloaded the joint and I could wiggle the rear tires. Glad I learned about that so I can have it properly checked more frequently in the future. |
What is excess? Using my iPhone, degrees off is 2 on both sides. Tires are wearing out fairly evenly for being so cheap. The previous owner put the cheapest Discount Tire possible. I'll get one more rotation out of them, barely. I other stuff to fix before replacing them with good rubber. May go 255 or 265.

Spec is 1.25 to 2.25 or so. Mine are down from 2+ to about 1.5 after new parts.
You need to do a test with spring tension removed to see if the ball joints are shot. I'm quite confident that's almost the only reason for rear tire destruction |
