Pre-oiling a new or rebuilt m62
Looking for any advice or tips on pre-oiling the M62 before a first start after it has has been fully drained, or a “new” motor for that matter.
I can’t see any way to spin the pump with a drill or other tool like one would do with an earlier American V8 so I wonder if BMW made any other arrangements. I have seen a setup whereby a tank of oil is pressurized and then attached by hose to the pressure sender port. Not sure if this would work on the M62 however. |

That will do it, except shouldn’t I worry about no lubrication for a while in all the important bits for the time it takes the pump to fully pressurize the motor and work the air out?

Oil circulation through an engine typically takes about 20 seconds. Your assembly lube should be fine for that period of time while oil from the sump makes its way through the engine. You can pull the spark plugs out for the initial spinup to reduce compression loading on the starter.

Thanks all, I appreciate the thoughts. I'll pull the valve covers anyway to check torques, etc. and to have them powder coated so I'll make sure there is a ample assembly lube in all the right bits, and crank it through by hand a few times. Pulling the plugs too seems like good advice too.

I like pre-oiling when I can on a rebuild prior to first start
I rebuilt an Ls1 for our lemons race team and used a clear hose with a drill activated fluid pump to put 3 quarts into the engine via threaded holes in the oil galleries. We pushed oil into a unused threaded hole after the pump and watched it come up thru the the oil pressure line. Then sealed the line and waited for it to appear near rocker arms. I would try to do same thing with the m62 and use oil pressure or vanos lines or other for entry points. |
