How Strict is the Drive Cycle?

1 Attachment(s)
My E53 failed SMOG (O2 monitor not ready). I've been performing the drive cycle for many attempts with no luck. I'm wondering if the procedure I'm using does not meet the requirements.

This is the official BMW drive cycle...
  1. Cold start for 2m10s
  2. Drive 20-30 mph for 3m15s
  3. Drive 40-50 mph for 15m
  4. Coast to stop and idle for 5m

Since I'm not able to follow the procedure exactly due to where I live, this is what I do...
  1. Cold start for 2m10s (w/ headlights, A/C, rear defroster on)
  2. Drive on local streets (stop/go) for a few minutes to a street w/o stop signs/lights
  3. Drive 22 mph for 3m15s (using cruse control)
  4. Drive on local streets (stop/go) for a few minutes to a freeway onramp
  5. Drive 57 mph for 15m (using cruise control)
  6. Exit freeway and coast to stop (with brakes) and idle for 5m

Do you think my real-life procedure meets the drive cycle requirements?

The test is probably for regulatory emissions approval. When I reset and do maintenance, I tell people to drive normally. Or drive it a little harder. The ECM will learn. An O2 sensor will respond better after getting really hot. Like, real highway speeds. Once sensors are hot, lower speeds are monitored better.

What maintenance has been done lately? Plugs? O2 sensors? Can you read live O2 data?

Try upping the time for the 1st two tests to at least an "even" 3 minutes & 4 minutes or slightly more (respectively)...instead of the "minutes/seconds" listed in the chart you posted. Also don't exceed 60MPH or 3000 RPM during the test cycle.

See the difference in your chart and the one below:

@Qsilver7, good to know that the specified durations are minimums. It was hard to get it exactly. I will try the longer durations as you suggested.

Could you repost your chart? It not showing up for me. Thanks!

The last notable event was a battery replacement, but that was over 3,000 miles ago.

Attached screen shot shows more data on the O2 monitors...

Your voltage is showing 11v, BMW's hate low or fluctuating voltage.

I realize your engine is not running but still....

@EODguy, good observation. That's interesting. The battery is only 3,000 miles old. I will check the voltage with a meter tomorrow. Thanks for pointing that out!

Here's the chart again:

@Qsilver7, thanks for reposting the drive cycle chart. Could you help me understand the followings?

1. What does FTP stand for?

2. Does "customer drive cycle" mean...
a) customers following the specified drive cycle exactly?
b) customers following the specified drive cycle as closely as possible?
c) customers' normal driving?
