BMW X5 2004 E53 Trans disengage after startup when cold (Trans Failsafe Prog)
I have a 2004 E53 4.4 w/ 215k miles. I've owned the car since 12k miles. After a cold start, the transmission will "shift" to neutral while gear selector remains in drive position after about 8-10 minutes of driving with no fault lights and no warning. After this happens, once car is stopped and the gear selector is moved to Park does the "Trans Failsafe Prog" light come on. At this point, the car can then be driven in limp-home mode (where Drive and Reverse work in their reduced state). If the car is stopepd with the key off for 90-120 seconds (where everything resets), the car can be started and driven with no fault lights or issues for remainder of day (until the next cold start the following day where same cycle repeats).
When the car loses drive in the above scenario, the only indication that something has gone wrong (other than the fact that you press the gas pedal and the engine revs but does not move) is the transmission gear indicator on the dash (not at gear shift selector) no longer has "D" highlighted. In fact, no gear is highlighted - all are non-bold. I've had a somewhat similar problem in the past at about 160k miles where after warmup, the car would go into Trans Failsafe Mode directly but would not "recover" until an extended rest period (+60 mins) and upon restart the issue would happen again. At this time, I had the mechatronics unit replaced and the issue went away (until now). What is strange this time around is that the current issue is like clockwork - once the engine/trans warms up (8-10 mins), whether being driven or not, the ECU seems to lose visibility into the transmission's current gear. After a short wait period with key off (2 mins), the car can be started and driven w/o issue for remainder of day, even if car sits for 4+ hours unused. I removed the transmission electrical connector, checked, cleaned, and reconnected with no change in behavior. The trans connector sleeve was changed when mechatronics unit was replaced and is not leaking. Aside from changing the mechatronics unit, any other suggestions? Battery and alternator are new and good, no issue there. Transmission behaves perfectly otherwise (no hard shifts, bad gears, slipping, etc. - behaves like brand new). Thanks |
Seems everyone is getting the 5088 L1-L4 code.
I'd check the codes 1st but I almost guarantee it is the switches in the gearshift mechatronics. No one sells the switches so the whole gearshift and cover (w/2nd switch) has to be replaced. 470.00 USD at BMW or 67.00-125.00 on Ebay, maybe less at a junkyard. The small cover with the leather boot is where one switch is but because I had a tool dropping incident I had to disassemble the whole console. If your scanner shows the 5088 code mechatronics and doesn't say L1-L4 then it's the magnetic reed switch inside the transmission valve body. Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk |
