Another window regulator down the tubes
 

I just relocated to northern Idaho. Left all my mechanical support behind. BMW of Spokane quoted me over $800 to replace window regulator. Ouch. Pretty steep. Could this be my last BMW ?
Anyone out there recommend a good mechanic ? Where I came from I could have got it done twice for 800 smackers[emoji593]
Winters comin, I’d appreciate any help.

$800 dollars!?! It better come with a hooker carrying a bag of coke for that price.....

Search this forum and YouTube for how to.

Most often the clip that holds the cable taught with springs fails and just that part can be replaced with a better than new repair kit.

Simpler just get a decent part from FCP Euro and learn how to replace it from YouTube video.

He is me. He's saying you can find your answers on xoutpost. I'm currently in Chicagoland which could have helped you more before relocating.

If you can't DIY you need to find a local Indy. Nobody should pay dealer prices after warranty.

It's not a fun job, but it's very DIY. I usually don't like to tackle the more difficult jobs (I don't even like to do brakes...and I don't), but I was able to do all 4 window regulators in an afternoon. The toughest part in the job is actually just yanking the door panels off, especially the rears. My indy (in expensive LaLaLand) wanted approx. $200 in labor to do each regulator if I supply the parts...so I've essentially earned $800 for my afternoon worth of work.

That seems optimistic for a first-timer. I have done five window regulators now and I could probably do all four in an afternoon if I had to (about an hour each). I think the first one I did took me about three hours to figure out and get all buttoned back up.



I will agree though, that this is squarely in DIY territory. There's nothing particularly complicated about it. Make sure not to turn the car on without the airbags hooked up, so that you don't get the airbag light on the dash. I am guessing OP doesn't have the right tool to reset the light.



Also, OP, you may be able to get away with just replacing the clips rather than the entire regulator. Replacement clips can be had for IIRC $10-20.

- It is a 2h job if you are slow and methodical, tons of DIYS in forum.

- I recently used a brand made by VDO, I posted info in forum so far so good. Others have used Dorman with mixed result.

- While there, take care of the infamous clips that are at the bottom of the glass.

- Then add a bit of butyl tape on the Vapor Barrier...

Agree that the first one will take more time, but it should be fairly simple after that initial learning curve.

He's only talking about doing one at this point.
