I've read through that thread a few times.
It's intimidating haha! Wish someone made a video on it

Hah! I don't. It's bad enough not being able to trust sellers of old Bimmers with mechanical odometers (gears commonly broke and easy to roll back). I don't want to add making the digital ones more suspect too. :wow:

The simple answer is yes and it's quite simple for "skilled people".
We need to remember that we live in the age of hackers where this would be considered "laughably easy" for some.
I grew up in former Yugoslavia where my neighbour was doing things (35 years ago) that would be impressive even today.
People who exhausted all posibilites with reviving the electronics on late 80's crushed high end Mercedes and have visited best shops in Germany would bring car to him.
In few days it'd be ready with no signs that electronics were ever touched.
The point is that late 90's and early 00's BMW electronics are no match for skilled people to do whatever they please with it.

You can easily roll back the odometer with the correct software, not that you should…

RocketyMan, would be able to do the same for someone else…?

My recent e53 purchase came with an altered cluster. The PO disabled all the warning lights. So I got another one to replace it with. Replacement cluster was 100k less miles. To get rid of the tamper dot all i had to do was change the vin in the cluster to the actual vin on the car using pa soft.
