Intermittent Check Lights warning

Hi All,

I tried searching, but couldn't find an answer.

on my 2006 X5 (E53), I get intermittent warnings to check the Low Beam Lights, Parking Lights or Number Plate Light.

The lights themselves seem to work, and the warning is only intermittent.

Also, my trailer lights do not work. Seems to be no power to the plug.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

JG

A bulb or connection is loose. A road bounce and loose part can trigger it. Or even rust. My X5 had an intermittent plate light. One bulb was so rusty, it would work on and off. The light cover was missing. I replaced both lights with LED inserts. The lights are super bright at night and no more light warnings. Plus, I cleaned off the contact points.

Do you have a stock trailer hitch and electricals?

The trailer hitch was on the car when we bought it. But it does not look original - some of the connections are spliced. I am guessing that the genuine hithc wiring is plug-in?

However, the warnings come for several lights - low beam, number plate, parking lights, etc.

The warnings could be related to spliced wires for the trailer wiring, but if that was the case they wouldn't occur until you plugged something into the trailer plug. Do you see warnings when you plug anything into your trailer wiring connector? (Even a tester?) Or do you see them at other times?

If you have the factory towing module, it will be present next to the battery under the spare tire. But if you see splices in the taillight housings or under the trunk floor, I would guess that you don't.

Sounds more like a bad body ground. Check the battery ground terminal.

It is raining here now. Will check when (if) it stops.

This was also suggested as the reason my trailer plug is not working.

Maty all be connected - although the trailer plug has not worked since I bought the car 3 years ago, but the warnings only started coming up recently.

Cheers,

JG
