X5 3.0 Starter Issue
Starter only spins the engine on the 2nd try. Occasionally on the first, but it usually takes 2 tries. No check engine light, dash lights up as normal, car runs perfectly. Everything is 99% perfect, just no starter action on the first try.
What do ya'll think? -Stuart |
Does the starter spin but not the engine or nothing spins ?? Ignition switch or starter would be my guess. Or is it that the engine just doesn't start?

Symptom is failing ignition switch or key.
Do you have alternate key? |
My x5 has done this few times. But it's been many weeks working fine now. Same happened on my e38 and in that case it was starter.
My friend has a spare ignition switch, gotta try that if/when problem is more present. |
The solenoid could be going out. It's work, but you can take it off and have it tested at a rebuild shop. I have a local shop that tests and rebuilds alternators. Since it's out and it tests bad, you can replace it. Try the other suggested items before taking it off.

Unfortunately, I only have 1 key. To answer 80stech, when I turn the key, the dash lights up, but no noise from the starter. Second try, it always cranks.

Have you cleaned and checked the connections at the battery and starter? If you haven't yet, don't put a wrench on the starter connection unless you have battery disconnected. Check the connection at the boost lug as well. Check grounds as well. Start with the basics and then maybe time to get the testlight or voltmeter into play. I don't have any experience with the EWS so if it comes to that maybe someone else can chime in on how to rule that out.
Has a remote starter been installed? |
Scan codes?
