HELP!!! dreaded 5088 trans fail safe fault
 

from my research seems this fault is one everyone will come across while owning a ZF gear boxed car , I have pretty much realised I'm going to have to delve into the gearbox internals which I am ok doing but my question is what else should I be checking once I'm in there , in anticipation of getting this problem one day i have a spare gearbox from a lower mileage car can i swap the internals over without the need for any coding , the box is from the same year and model.

I just went through this and if it shows 5088 or 5088 L1-L4 (Foxwell NT-510) the 5088 is the magnetic reed switch in the valve body.

If it shows the 5088 L1-L4 then it's the mechatronic gearshift.

The interlock cable can also be screwed up and may show as either.

The L1-L4 is show in the extension description on the Foxwell but I have no idea if it or how it shows with other scanners.

Which zf gearbox do you have?

I rebuilt the mechatronic valve body on a zf 6hp. Also all new solenoids. Made a significant change. Much smoother now. Can't even feel the shifts anymore in stock tune.

It's very easy to do, but lots attention to detail needed. Total cost... last year....600 bucks.

thanks for replies I do have a foxwell nt510 now had done all the scanning with my snap on one , just waiting for the fault to pop up again and will scan using the foxwell as i cleared all the codes with the snap on one.

Yes mine to is the 6hp box am hoping to strip and rebuild the valve body of my spare so I can then just swap it straight over as my car is in daily use so need to keep downtime to a minimum, hence why I am hoping there wont need to be any coding or programming on fitting the spare.

Any pointers as to which parts to replace and from which supplier gratefully appreciated kind of only wont to go in there just the once.

Before you get your heart set on a transmission rebuild, take a look at my post about the same issue and why the L1-L4 is completely different and the extension description is the difference between a problem in the gearshift lever vs. the valve body magnetic switch. The interlock cable was a problem on my replacement shifter but the magnetic switch needed to be replaced too.

ok I wasn't aware there was any electronics at the gear lever end I thought it was all done in the gearbox , maybe I need to look into replacing that first , I wasn't going to be swapping the whole box over just the mechatronic valve body section , still waiting for the fault to reappear so I can re scan and see what it says.
I did replace the battery today as it seems low voltage can cause some weird issues with these cars, alternator was only replaced a little while ago so that rules out any voltage issues hopefully.

well here we are nearly 3 years later and I've finally swapped out the mechatronic unit so I guess I've not done bad time wise since this fault first popped up :rofl: , I got to say what a different car it is to drive the gear change is soooo much smother its never been that nice since I brought it.

The swap itself was not that big a job either the oil seemed what I would expect for its age with minimal sludge in the sump no swarf on the magnetics but all the rubber seals had aged hardened , so I guess just doing a seal plus filter and oil change is a good thing to do to keep things fresh.
