bmw e53 starting issue/question

06' BMW e53 has done me nothing but right throughout the year I've had it, but just recently I've had it fail to start twice. I turned the key let it crank 3 times before it started. This happened once around a week ago and just recently the other day.

Another concern I have is sometimes when the gear shifts the car drops RPM and lurches a little bit. Anything to be worried about?

Yeah...you need to find the cause. I think it'll leave you stranded one day. Read the codes and see what comes up.

Mine has a weird starting issue. I have to pause at key position 2 for 3 seconds before it cranks. If I turn the key straight to crank, nothing happens.

I believe the e53 is the LAST car to have fuel pressure valve on the fuel rail. Test the fuel pressure. Incidentally, mine would shift weird at take offs. The fuel filter was 17 years old and was full of garbage. The car now runs perfectly.

When "codes" are mentioned it'll be from using a scanner like a Foxwell NT-510 or NT-520, ISTA-D, etc.

A bidirectional scanner (as above) will show you a code like 5088 (transmission problem) and may allow you to "reset" it. Regular cheap scanners will show a generic code like p0123 which encompasses many problems like fuel, electrical or whatever in different systems depending on vehicle make and won't reset crap.

None of these will show on the cluster.
A Foxwell NT-510 will cost about 120 dollars but to have a shop (dealer or independent) will charge 125 to 250 to read them for you, so you save money on 1st use.

Not sure which scanner you have but if it's giving you "p" codes it could be completely incorrect.

If you plan on DIYing a good scanner like the 510 and 520 is a must have tool. There are others. I have found the Foxwell scanners to be the most user friendly and intuitive. Clear the codes and see what comes back.

Does it crank every time and just not start on the first try sometimes or does nothing happen and then after some number of attempts it cranks and starts?

by all means, get a good/cheap Foxwell scan-tool
