Broken ABS Module pin

Hi this is my first ever on a forum so I’m probably doing this wrong:dunno: but,
I own a 2003 x5 3.0i and I have the dsc triangle, amber abs and red brake light. I did some research on here and found that the abs module is usually the problem so I went and checked that and low and behold I found a pin that was bent all the way to the bottom. So I tried to straighten the pin but ultimately I failed and snapped it in half. Ever since that I haven’t noticed a change with the car so I’m guessing that that pin was the one causing some of the problems I have yet to check the sensors which will be what I’m doing because I’m 98% sure the reason the brake light is red is because the brake sensor but I’m also going to test speed sensors. I saw that people were sending in their modules to get rebuilt I was wondering if that is really necessary for me since I suspect that the module itself is in good condition but I have yet to do any tests on it because I’m not sure how to test the module itself(I know how to test the sensors). I have never used a solder but I bet I could learn quickly since I have one and have some extra electronics laying around to practice. I just wanted to see if this was a good idea or even possible.

Thank you.

I'd suggest heading to the junkyard and getting an extra plug off an ABS sensor wiring section and see how to dissect it to get the pins out. You should have enough pins to get the job done. I'd speculate the trifecta is not due to the ABS module at all.

Well it’s the male connector that has the broken pin not the plug itself, and if I checked all the sensors and those weren’t the problem would it be the abs module

You could probably solder in a jumper wire to by-pass the broken pin but sounds like that's out of your wheelhouse (and from what I've seen on a video might be likely that you can cause more damage to the fine wires if you open up the module) so maybe take it to a mechanic if you have a good one nearby or maybe send the module in fior rebuild??(I have no experience with that so maybe someone else can chime in on doing that.) You can't assume that the module is causing the trifecta but the broken pin needs to be delt with either way.

You might check what the broken pin is for as well, small chance it might be something redundant or not critical but it would be interesting to know.

Like said check the pin number of that damaged one.

Here is the pin in question third pin from the right of anyone knows the function of it that would be greatly appreciated

Oh wow so it’s just the can-bus lights does that mean all my systems work?

Clavurion 11-30-2021 02:38 PM

If there is still half of the pin left it could just make contact. Check trouble codes with diagnostics if the actual problem even has anything to do with CAN-bus.

I don’t have a diagnostics tool just an obd2 scanner

andrewwynn 12-01-2021 12:31 AM

You can jumper around with just telephone splices no solder needed

Red brake usually means low fluid or hand brakes engaged.

Brake wear sensor has its own icon

( O )

You need a proper scanner such as foxwell to diagnose abs.

Bimmer man24 12-01-2021 02:13 PM

Okay, so I tried to check the sensors but I couldn’t get my leads down the tube since the pins are too far down I tried alligator clips but there’s not enough space anyone have any good ways to test it. For some odd reason the front passenger brakes doesn’t have a brake sensor at all it’s completely gone but yeah I forgot there is a “check brake lining” that comes on in the little dash screen. I checked the fluid and it is right at the minimum so Im probably just going to do a flush on the fluid since it’s black. Also my car has its own parking brake light. I was looking at the fox well scanner the nt301 would it be able to do everything a very expensive diagnostic tool can. Any if anyone has any good recommendations for the best diagnostic tool for under $100 that would be appreciated:).

Bimmer man24 12-01-2021 02:14 PM

And what did you mean by telephone splice?

NT-510 is the most basic scanner that is useful.

There are only brake pad sensors on left front and right rear wheels

This is what a phone connector looks like.

You can use a short piece of 24ga wire to jumper around the main connector and two of these butt splices.

Bimmer man24 12-01-2021 02:17 PM

Oh wow I didn’t know that btw I tested the female wheel speed sensor because it was easy to test but I only got like 0.020 volts and no resistance on any of the sensors wheel and brake

andrewwynn 12-01-2021 02:23 PM

You can pull the brake pad sensor off the back of the brake pad to see if it's worn. Often people will swap a worn sensor onto new pads or the pad is worn out.

If the pad and sensor was replaced, you still need to reset the system.

Meausured Ω across the sensor should read open not shorted.

Bimmer man24 12-01-2021 02:26 PM

I’m guessing I need a diagnostic tool to reset it. I meant to say it was OL does that mean it’s functioning correctly?

andrewwynn 12-02-2021 12:40 AM

Nope. To reset you need the key that's it.

OL means worn out should read shorted. Are the pads worn out?

You can strip the end of the wire and twist together to test the system but if the pads are worn they need to be replaced.

When the sensor is replaced, to reset you simply turn the ignition on without starting and wait a full minute.
