Weird stalling Issue? Transmission?

Been having this stalling issue on my e53 3.0 2002 this last several weeks. The x5 would start fine, put into gear and drive with no issues, its just when I come to a complete stop(which still runs/idles) and press on the gas that it stalls right away, not a struggle or anything, just dies. Restart the car and drives like no problem but might stall again if I come to another complete stop. Its a crap shoot if it stalls or not, sometime it does and sometimes it doesn't. It feels like if the transmission didn't shift down and hold a higher gear and stalls when I gas it. I have played in sport manual mode for a bit and downshift it to 1st when coming to a stop but not sure if it actually down to 1st. Not sure if this is relevant but my old man was playing around with the CVV before this happen and he doesn't think this is the issue :dunno:

I've heard folk report that a faulty cam-shaft sensor can cause this. Someone will be along soon to confirm this... ;)

B clutch failure was causing the same issue for me (2005 4.8is)

So have you read the codes?

How do your intake boots look? Any cracks? Might be a vacuum leak. Leading to a lean condition at (warm) idle. Might also pull your idle speed control valve and clean the inside with brake cleaner and make sure it rattles.

Any check engine light?

That somebody will be me.

My first repair on my m54 was intake cam sensor.

The symptoms of a failing CPS especially intake are random stall at slow speed with increasing frequency and no related code (though usually will get odd random cylinder misfire code).

What happened to me was when I would be puttering along at a slow speed and let off the gas it would stall.

Two examples:

1) slow crawl looking for parking spot, off throttle to coast into spot, engine stalls before I turn it off like it read my mind.

2) waiting at a red light to turn left, light turns green I pull forward into the intersection but coast to a stop, when I off throttle the engine stalls.

Happened a couple times over a month when I first got my 01 e53 3.0. But after a couple months of owning the frequency went up to weekly; searching the internet with the unrelated random cylinder misfire code led me to xoutpost with somebody suggesting the CPS being at fault and they were correct. 9000 posts and 6 ¹/₂ years later I likely am coming full circle sending that same advice back into the world.

Use *only* OEM CPS. If you are on factory CPS I would change the exhaust CPS at the same time.

Oh: also screw fishing the cord under the intake that shit took 90 minutes the first time, when I did on my wife's e53 a year later I just routed the cord around the intake and took literally seconds!

Your symptom description is slightly different but you may have also experienced similar to what I described. I don't remember 100% certain if the second case the stall happened after I let off the throttle or while I just added a little throttle. In any case, at least five times over the years similar posts on the topic have 100% been the CPS on m54 so you likely have your culprit.

Was able to get a code reader and reading
P0340 CPS
P0141 O2 sensor

Been driving around today with multi trips and didn’t stall on me one but have codes pop back up after clearing them. Also been kind of noticing a bit worst fuel mileage too. Maybe I should just change the damn thing. Is there one for intake and one for exhaust ? The one by the oil filter is the intake and easier one to change first I guess?

camshaft position sensors; sorta simple to replace on M54

I just changed my exhaust CPS today (I had gotten P0365 & P0369 codes, recently). It's the one located on the front of the head, just below the lip of the valve cover. On mine, the connector resisted coming off (might've been the original CPS, no signs that it had been touched before), so I removed the CPS still plugged-in.

It was a tight fit, reaching between the fan shroud and the head (my aftermarket electric fan controller had to be moved aside), but the 5mm allen wrench did the trick. I eventually pried the connector off of the original CPS, then it was simple after that to install the new one.

I didn't need an intake CPS yet, but it looks easier to reach and replace. I plan to replace mine when I get around to replacing the CCV, so I can run the wire under the manifold at the same time.

I would change the intake CPS before manifold work. You can always re-route after. On my cars the intake CPS failed first.

By the time you get an error for CPS it's been broken a very long time. I've never gotten an actual cps error code on my car just process of elimination to make the call. (and people going before me).

So: yes quite you need to change. You should change them both. How many miles? Wife and mine both failed about 130,000 miles.

It’s about 330k km:wow:
