Calling all experts, what would cause this?
This is the 2nd time this has happened. My 2003 X5 4.6is is running well and I get on the gas, it down shifts and then a strong smell of oil as one of the bolts (cap and stud) are “popped” cause a significant oil leak out of the now open hole in the value cover on the passenger side. Thoughts?

Stud failure? Just came loose from vibration?
Was the valve cover replaced recently? |
Yes, the valve cover was recently replaced. I find it so odd that this happened after giving it hard acceleration. Could the system be over pressurizing?

Only if something failed like CCV. Have you noticed bad oil consumption?
Did you use new grommets/bolts and torque everything to spec ? I'm guessing oil in the threads during assembly threw off the torque or something. |

I think you’d blow the CCV hoses before stripping a stud. Was it under torqued? Did you follow the torque sequence when installing the valve cover? If not, maybe that bolt became loose as you tightened the others and vibration lead to it falling out. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |
