Key rotates freely in the door lock
The lock in the driver's door stopped functioning today, when the key is pushed in it just rotates freely about 270 degrees and doesn't operate the lock. Otherwise the central locking works, so I assume there is just something broken in the lock assembly itself. There also seems to be some kind of a safety system in the lock which makes it spin freely if something other than the key is pushed in. As a matter of fact it was raining a lot of kind of a wet snow today so maybe that could have caused something like this if it froze the lock. But I still believe the lock needs fixing.
Anyway, I looked into this and there seems to be repair kits available, but just to confirm since I'm not too familiar with the mechanics of the lock , should a kit similar to this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-X5-E53-...4713315?_ul=IL fix the issue? |
Key rotates freely in the door lock
I use this kit.
A-Premium Door Lock Repair Kit... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQQQE80...p_mob_ap_share I kept a spare in my glovebox. I didn't have a working fob so I had to refurbish my lock cylinder about every 9 months. Door handle break can be cold related. The lock cylinder break is pure bad design. Too thin of metal made of cast brittle metal it will fatigue failure within about 600 operations. |
Thanks for the quick answer, will order a repair kit today. And yeah about the lock design itself, there is definitely something wrong with it.

I switched to e70 and have working key fob I hope I won't have to refurbish my new lock but if I do I will add some jb Weld to double the thickness of the part that self destruct
