I was referring to the top edge seal on the long plastic handle itself - not the hatch button cover. The factory seal fails and lets water into the entire hatch handle area.

The new design seal fits in addition to the original factory seal and fixes the water ingress issue.

Most likley. I discovered the fix when my license plate lights started filling with water...

Yes its been updated in fact to prevent leaking.
I've seen pictures on this forum.
I've also seen 2-3 different designs as I've pulled like 5 of these complete trunk latch panels from the scrap yard
I was not able to find a single one with everything working lol. All of them at least one licence plate light wouldn't work. Either left or right side. So I just ran a wire from the working side to the non working side and for now I live with a light error, until I find one in a better condition.
But the ones I removed with updated design, there's no rust and they're very clean at the latch button area.

My experience exactly, if and when I do happen to see one that is still there.

Last week I went to the pic n pull yard, saw the trunk strip was there and looked to be in great shape. I was so excited (and incredibly cold) that I totally didn't notice the hack soldering job hard wired to the lights

button also doesn't work so it's hard to call it an upgrade from the one missing a light and doing the phantom open when it gets wet.
