Pano shade repair kit?
 

So my sunshade on my panel roof is broken. It used to work but the fabric was removed and at some point the two piece of separated and then in another point they just broke completely and stayed tucked in the back of the headliner.

I try removing the rear glass so that I could get a better look. But I can clearly see that I'm going to have to drop the whole cassette.

I want to order the shade repair kit but I cannot find one specific for the e53.

I did find some websites that referenced a repair kit for the e83 X3 with a pano roof but when I go to ECS it says does not fit or compatible with e53.

I did find this in real OEM. When looking under the pano sunroof section, it references a floating headliner kit. When I take that part number and put it in ECS it shows it as a sunroof sliding mechanism kit but it doesn't make any sense. I figured it would say something like floating headliner, not sunroof mechanism.

I tried searching this forum as well as Google with x Outpost in the search phrase and I swear I just cannot find anybody ever mentioned the shade repair kit part number. They all just post up links to TIS on how to remove and reinstall the cassette or glass.


And then there is this other pano roof repair kit for the e53 as well

So I have no idea which one to get just to repair the shade.

Not sure why this is so hard to find.

Hey! This is really good! I need to repair the sunshade on my E83. The two parts don't move together as only the front one moves.

I would like to get this fixed and need to do more research. This kit could prove very useful.

I have not done it, But I believe you can remove both sunshades thru the opening IF you remove just the rear glass.

You can remove both sunshades through the top without dropping the headliner and cassette. Done it on our E61 wagon which shares the pano roof design with the E83 and E53 I believe.

couldn't do it in my case. once rear glass was removed both halves of the shade were stuck all the way i the back in the resting position stacked on top of each other. no amount of pressing sunroof button or going through the reset/initialization process would free any part of the shade to come forward.

maybe if the front half would come out, its possible i may have been able to get the rear piece out someway but not both on top of each other like it was.

so are you saying you have repaired your shade? did you use a repair kit? which one did you use?

Ah, yes the shades being bound will hamper the procedure. Here is a pdf of how it's supposed to work. I followed this procedure and removed the front/rear glass which made things easier and is only a few screws to remove. Adjusting them upon reinstallation was fairly straight forward too. Removal does seem possible by just removing the rear glass if your shades are moving as they should. Doesn't help you much I know. Sorry. You might be stuck dropping the cassette. Have you tried hand cranking the mechanism with the allen wrench? Or is that method exclusively for the glass?

I do have some pictures of the fiddly clips/springs on the floating liners though if you run into trouble. Their orientation is not immediately apparent when going to reinstall. Or at least they weren't to me.

Edit: No, I did not repair the shades. The work was part of a suede headliner modification. I cleaned and greased everything before reinstalling so hopefully that prevents issues in the future.

Thanks for posting that TIS pdf of the pano roof. I'll have to try the method of pulling out the rear glass to remove the sun shades on mine.
