I have been chasing a P code for a while.
It’s a purge valve system issue. I did a little swapping of parts and I
now have determined the culprit. I’m absolutely sure it’s the used Purge Valve
I swapped in. I have a new purge valve to install.
My question is will the SES light extinguish after I install a known good part?

I can clear the code, but that also clears the monitors.
Prefer the brain to realize the system is now correct.
But not sure the computer is smart enough to realize I fixed the problem.

What’s the consensus?

AFAIK it will realize and shut off the SES for you. Not sure of the drive cycle requirements, but it will self clear. The stored code will remain in the DME for future viewing.

SES will usually clear after a number of drive cycles if you don't want to reset drive monitors. Do you need to get emissions tested soon ?

Just got the state inspection in January. Wanting to have a dash without

Then clear codes to make it go away. The only reason to wait it out would be if you have an inspection due shortly.

It's also by far the quickest way to know if the part replacement fixed the problem.

In 20 miles it self cleared.
Some starts and stops and gas refills.

Quite the feeling that I mastered the computer today.

The OBD II diagnostics should realize that the fault condition no longer exists, but there's no reason to not do the reset and allow the monitors to run until they come to ready. Either way, it should take a similar time. The SES will remain on until the computer figures out that you did something, or the monitors will run until they come to Ready. Either way, you cannot present the car at the smog station for its bi-annual check up.
