Turbo not alive in 3.0d?
 

Hello to all, been reading around before posting, and just need to know if the turbo stops working are we looking at a total power loss to the point of no /limited motion in car or a noticeable loss of oomph as I have now in mine but is still driveable?


It hadn't made any odd noises ever there was from day 1 a slight whistling sound that never got louder in the 14 years I have had her, 2 days ago I just noticed it was just not delivering any punch, car still hits 110kph and over fine but not as fast....


No recent work done that I can see caused this like air filter being put in wrong or on wrong causing air intake sensor to give wrong reading and non fire up of turbo...and have no idea if the CATs are blocked as one fella said was the issue with his power loss....dunno just stumped....the accumulator hoses seem fine....



Worry is can i drive it in this state safely? i read doing so that it can cause engine damage?

Without turbo/boost it will work like naturally aspirated engine. So it will work but with less power. Like said earlier you likely have a cracked exhaust manifold which can explain most of the symptoms. You can do a rough check on turbo vacuum actuation just by checking if the rod on vacuum solenoid pulls the guide vanes closed when engine is started. (This can be seen without taking anything apart from above with a flashlight.)

Much appreciated clavourion, time to research the terminology you used guide vanes rod etc and where from above i can see what you refer to, sorry am a novice most diy i have done is remove readd front bumper

Ps must have cracked manifold as on cold start i observed smoke in area...just odd that the timing of power loss has not coincided with when i noticed the smell in cabin of fumes/due to the manifold issue

Picture tells a 1000words, apologies though what is the rod i am looking for movement in, the black rod with elbow type end on it? I can see the manifold too connected thanks for insight...i hope my cracked one hasnt released any bits into turbo...

The cracks in the exhaust manifold get slowly worse until they bleed off so much exhaust gas pressure the turbo doesn't spool up properly.

You have a known fault, related to the exhaust manifold - fix that first, then diagnose any remaining turbo issue (which I doubt you'll need to do).

Wayne cheers fella, good to know and making more sense now the gas loss not allowing spooling up, looking on ebay now found cast iron from uk germany poland...gonna go for one with most sales i think...be interesting to see what resellers locally flog this part for....again thanks

About once a year The issue comes up where the vacuum accumulator (not sure the precise name) fails. The symptom is that you can have power for a spurt but if you climb a hill you'll run out of power.

Vacuum leak in plenty of places can cause the problem
