Turbo boost pipe query
 

Hell all, hope you are well, ok excuse my being pedantic the boost pipe, what is the purpose of it? it 'exhales'? the crude image sorry, but in the curved area in green shown by green arrow I have some play ...couple of mm, will this affect anything? reason I ask and despite the kind feedback of wpoll and clavurion who mention my turbo issue not spooling could be the cracked manifold i have, i am just pig headed and wondering if this little play is bad...ps the green straight lines represent to boost pipe the curve green line is where i have some mm play...just curious

am i said in answering my own question? article i dug up says :

The boots create all the connection points in your system. These components are the most failure-prone parts, and as we know, a system is only as good as its weakest link. Boots link the piping to the turbocharger, to the intercooler, and to the throttle- body/intake manifold. These units are in place to allow for engine movement, and they work to absorb this shock. If the system were solid and without flex, the turbocharger would move, which would result in bending or cracking of the piping or the intercooler itself. Additionally, the boots provide connection points to separate the components, allowing for individual servicing.

There is a rubber seal in that boost pipe connection so it's some what elastic not a rigid connection.

Thanks again....jeez I really need this sorted , ok its not that it cant get up speed but its shamefully slow.....hoping its that cracked exhaust manifold actually affecting it and no allowing proper spooling of turbo as wpoll said........i'll get the new cast iron part and mention it to mechanic and take it from there

While the rubber gasket on the boot pipe connection is flexible I'm not sure that the boost pipe can be rotated very much. There are two attachments for the flange on this pipe - a hooked attachment and a single bolt opposite the hook, as can be seen in this image..

But having said that, if the gasket is OK and the hook and bolt are present and correct, any movement must be "normal". :thumbup:

Hey wpoll thanks for reply, appreciate your patience with a novice like me...okeee if we are talking about the same thing here and the flange you mention is one off the shiny AL boost pipe (what I was told the shiny one is) then yup reading up on it there has to be some play or else it all gets rattled to bits..
basically you can see one bolt in pic i show and as per arrow thats where there is hmmm couple of mm play but not come loose at all....

Wpoll hi again part with play is between pipe4 the filtered air pipe and flange 1 with gasket 5 in between it....ok must stop worrying over this

Part #1 is the MAF and #4 is the charge inlet pipe. They are bolted together pretty firmly - I can't recalll seeing much play in this joint but there is a rubber gasket (as you point out - #5).

As long as this joint is air-tight, it will be fine.
