2005 x5 4.4 Coolant Leak from "Y" fitting, top front of engine drivers side
 

I have a coolant link coming from a plastic "Y" fitting.
It is located directly underneath the front of the intake on the drivers side.

Any idea what it is called? attempted searches turned up nothing for me.

Any idea how difficult it is for a backyard mechanic to replace this or should I just take it to an independent shop and if so, any idea how much I should expect to pay? is this a $500 repair?

Unless the tee is actually cracked, it's more likely to be a loose clamp. Replace the clamp with a decent one.

Small leak = bad crimp. Large leak = broken part. You can try to fit a T and new clamps. Looking at the hose design, you should able to do it yourself. Might be a little time consuming if hose ends are under or behind other parts.

Agreed, get a new part. These guys run under pressure and hot. That Oetiker clamp from the factory is a pain, but it's a good clamp. he's not your failure. the replacement in the pic might be an ok short term for a beat up hose, but long term, you need to do the whole thing.

I agree that the Oetiker clamp from the factory is a good clamp but they DO fail - especially with years of heating and cooling cycles when used on cooling systems. My BMW F650GS Dakar motorcycle uses (used!) these same clamps from the factory and after 15 years or riding, they pretty much all leaked coolant. I've replaced most of them with BMW screw clamps - no more leaks.
