4x4, ABS, DSC Trifecta Help

2006 E53 X5 4.4i Automatic

I am getting codes:
54C4 VTG Calibration
5F39 Calibration Faulty

I cannot make get these to clear and stay cleared. These came up when my wife got a flat tire, or shortly after. We were on here spare for about 5 weeks. It is the factory 17" spare, the car has the factory size 19's on it.

No other codes. The gear in the transfer case motor looks like new, I had replaced it about 2 years ago. Transfer case fluid was changed last year with BMW DTF-1 Transfer Box Oil.

SAS is good, it is calibrated and reading good on the scanner. I am using a Foxwell 530 to read and clear codes.

Any thoughts where I should look next? How do I tell if the VTG module is functional, and how do I tell if the VTG motor is still working?

Do you hear the VTG doing a reset/calibration as soon as you switch the car off? You can normally hear it operating (buzzzt, buzzzt) about 2-3 seconds after you kill the ignition.

I will check that tonight.

I do not hear the actuator moving. Will it move with the trifecta lights on or do those need to be clear?

It may not auto-calibrate with the error codes active. Does the Foxwell allow you to run a manual caliration routine of the transfer case?

The other thing that can cause the trifecta is a bad yaw sensor and I think a bad wheel speed sensor. Have you checked those?

Can you check the individual wheel speeds with your scanner? If one is out of tolerance, it usually throws a code. If your speedometer is working it's not your LR. I'd suggest moving that spare to another corner if it's the one out of spec and see what happens. You can also measure the circumference of the tire to see how closely they match.

Like wpoll suggested, try to reset the transfercase manually and see if that works. It might be that driving with the spare wore the friction plates beyond re-setting.

I don't hear it too, do you know if this calibration is doable with ista or inpa? And how to check if the actual values are correct?

I was able to get the codes to clear temporarily, and when I tried to do a transfer case adaptation I could hear it moving under the vehicle, then the scan tool said it could not complete the reset. So I know the actuator is working. That must mean the VTG module is good,so my last thought is to replace/repair the transfer case. Any other thoughts come to mind?
