Code Help 2001 X5 4.4i M62 E53
 
Car is running fine, but feels like it is losing power.
I had the following codes:

8C Activation Map Cooling
22 Function, inlet Camshaft Control Bank 2
62 Activation Tank Venting Valve
71 Signal Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1
OD Oxygen Sensor heater before Cat. Conv. bank 1

I replaced the following:

Fuel Tank Breather Valve (Vent Valve)
Mass Air Flow Sensor
Thermostat
Both O2 sensors before the Catalytic Converter

Now I still have the following codes:
8C Activation Map Cooling
22 Function, inlet Camshaft Control Bank 2
71 Signal Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1

I thought this would fix all of the issues, but it did not. I don't want to keep throwing parts at this because they are expensive. I do have a way to test the camshaft pos. sensors which I plan to do soon.
About 50k miles ago we did a lot of work on this car: timing chains, vanos, camshaft pos. sensors, valve covers, water pump, and more.

It would be really nice to get some help with these codes. I can't figure out the Map Cooling code, and would really appreciate any help on the other two codes.

Map cooling? Must be a DME map cooling scenario. Either the lower radiator or head coolant sensor is a culprit. I would guess the head sensor. The lower one is used for aux fan activation.

Have timing guides been replaced?

The timing guides were replaced about 50k miles ago with the timing chain job. I do not know where the lower radiator sensor or head sensor are located, but I'm sure I can find them. I know that neither have been changed. Thanks for your quick reply, I will check these out. By the way, do you know if these can be tested?

and for both banks to be throwing camshaft timing codes-your guides are probably gone. Buckle up and look into that(again)!

Yes, use a voltmeter to check resistance. Compare it to a new one or reference procedure. I'll have to check my Bentley. It may have a reference reading.

Wow! I certainly hope not. That was a horrible job. Those guides should not be gone after 50K miles. It might have been even less than that.

I ordered a new water temperature sensor (head sensor). I also ordered two camshaft position sensors. These are easy to do. I agree with you that it is probably not the lower radiator temperature sensor. I think the temperature sensor will solve the MAP Cooling code. I hope the other codes are just the camshaft position sensors.

Thank you X5chemist. I replaced the water temperature sensor (head sensor) as you suggested, and that took care of the MAP Cooling code.

I did a little more digging on the other two codes:

22 Function, inlet Camshaft Control Bank 2
71 Signal Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1

I found a video that makes good sense to me. Since I replaced the timing guides and chain not that long ago, I thought there must be something else going on. The following video on replacing the timing chain tensioner makes sense. I waited on replacing the camshaft position sensors. Instead I ordered a new timing chain tensioner. I think that these codes represent the early waring of a timing chain tensioner that is getting weak and allowing the poor timing. The following video explains this quite well:

Nice fix. Did you happen to measure resistance old vs new sensor? When I do coolant pipes soon, I'm swapping out the block temp sensor as preventative maintenance. It's good know the DME has a MAP for cooling if a temp sensor acts up or fails.

Replaced the timing chain tensioner as suggested by Timm's BMW Repairs and Information. See Video:

This made my 4.4i snappy and happy again. It is sounding better too, less like a diesel.

I did not test the camshaft position sensors. I left the old ones in, and the two remaining codes: 22 Function, inlet Camshaft Control Bank 2
71 Signal Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1, just went away after replacing the timing chain tensioner.

Timm reported in his video that the early warning sign for the tensioner failure was codes that were typically camshaft bank 1 over advanced. He does a much better job of explaining this than I ever could. He says if you change the tensioner quickly, you could save your guides from being destroyed by a slapping timing chain.

By the way, X5chemist, I still have my camshaft position sensors in the package. No need to test the old ones when they are working fine. I would love to know what the readings on a good sensor would be.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help. No codes on the X5 4.4i. Fun to drive again.
