Powered tail lift

I have a 2002 4.4 x5 e53, has anyone managed to fit powered tail lift to the E53 ? , if so ,a '' How to '' would be very useful.

On mine the small struts were shot. I replaced them and added helper springs. The small springs give an extra push to wide open the hatch. Helper upper hatch springs.

You could possibly adapt the power lift units from a later model X5 (E70 +) of from the Range Rover cars. There's been a few threads about this on here over the last few years.

I remember a thread on the helper springs that would push the hatch open on release.

I never went for it because I was concerned it would shorten the life of the self closing latch mechanism though.

I have never seen anyone post a successful auto open/close powered set up. Could you adapt one from say a Chrysler Pacifica as it only uses a extra large one side piston? Maybe but plan on fabrication and wiring. Nothing that could not be done.

Good Luck.
