Self level susp. Inact.
 

Last week I got self level suspension inact error. I have 2004 x5 3.0d 160kw. Scanned the car, got right height level sensor error. I have rear air suspension, left level sensor is replaced and both airbags replaced with arnotts. Also checked fuses, theyre ok. I replaced rear right level sensor and the error didnt go away, last time I changed left sensor it dissapeared with driving. Also sometimes compressor pumps either left or right air bag too high.

Now things get interesting, if I turn headlights on before turning ignition on, then my car wont show the error code, even with scanners. But if I turn the lights on after turning ignition on then the error appears and even in scanner. The error appears even if I dont turn headlights on at all.

Is there a chance that also right front level sensor might be faulty even tough I have only rear air suspension. Or does the front right level sensor show different error?

You need to get a scanner(INPA, FOXWELL,Etc) that can read what the actual sensor(s) are doing and whether they are registering. I have had a few of these cars and the most recent one had me scratching my head with the same warning. Was able to determine in INPA that it went into "transport" mode because I was adjusting ride height. Had to dig deep to figure it out. On the Foxwell, you go to "service" and see what mode it is in. Your situation with the headlights is interesting. Please keep us updated.

I’ll try to get hands on the right scanner. I myself think might ot be the front right sensor? If it acts weirdly with headlights on/off. I bet that even if I change the new sensor back to old oem one, then it acts the same with headlights turned on before turing ignition on. Front right sensor is headlight level adjuster sensor but does it also show, if broken, self level susp inact error?

If you have xenons with auto leveling the rear right sensor works for both headlight leveling and rear suspension. If the sensor was some after market unit it's not uncommon that it's not working as intended when there should be separate circuits for both systems.

Did you calibrate the system after replacing the sensor?

Hooked up my car with INPA, car showed voltages in both rear sensors when lights were turned on before turning on ignition. And when turining on ignition when lights are not turned on, inpa shows that right rear sensor doesnt have any voltage. Funny and also sad story. As seen in pictures below, maybe anyone smarter spots somethingg else wrong in these pics?

I havent calibrated the system yet, Ill do it with INPA tomorrow. Now I came to a tought that I also replaced tires to winter tires while replacing sensor. Maybe it needs calibrating, Ill update tomorrow.

Still most likely what I said earlier. Poor quality sensor which has both sensor circuits internally connected together when there should be separate circuits for both systems. There has been similar cases on this forum.

I have AIC sensors on both sides, so I should get OEM ones?

Maybe its the switch, some wires maybe got damaged and thats why sensor acts strangely?
