3.0d, EGR Pressure Converter? Or what the...?
Okay, so I know there aren't many diesel tractors among you guys, but I will try though.
Anyhow, I'm still in the process of working on my E53 3.0d (M57, 2006) and I got a few times 4501 fault code (Exhaust-gas recirculation control, control deviation). Luckily, still no problems in driving (or not that I can notice). But I had a similar code on my E46 (M47 engine) along with few others and replacing the EGR pressure converter (#11747796634) resolved the problem. I was thinking of doing the same here on my tractor (also as a precaution, since these old valves do die) but I got lost in the process. So, where the hell is the EGR pressure converter located and how many of them are there? If I followed the vacuum hose from EGR correctly, I stumbled upon some other thing, that RealOEM calls Electr.valve (#11747810831). I thought this is used to control swirl flaps and that it is attached to the intake manifold. Maybe I'm wrong? I couldn't find the "other converter." But now I know nothing, google and youtube don't help much, so I came here to ask for advice: Which one of these suckers is the right EGR pressure converter, and where should it be located? And what is the other one for then? #11747796634 (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...36#11747796634) or #11747810831 (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...77#11747810831) P.S. It is not impossible that the previous owner (or owners) replaced the 11747796634 with 11747810831 (if that's possible at all), since some douchebag owned the car at some point and did terrible maintenance. :dunno: Any ideas? |
11747796634 is for EGR. Located under the intake manifold. (PWM pressure converter, vacuum hose with blue stripe)
https://www.pss-autosoft.net/diagram...s/G_278084.png 11747810831 is for swirl flaps. Located on the intake manifold (underside of the plenum). (On/off solenoid, vacuum hose with yellow stripe) |
Thanks! That's what I thought.
I'll check better when I'm at my garage again and I'll post some photos if maybe anyone has a similar question in the future. It's not impossible that someone messed smth up. |
On this TIS diagram, EGR control pressure converter is #2, with #2a being it's vacuum supply and #2b being the line from the pressure convert to the EGR.

The valve with part number 11747810831 is for the engine mounts on my uk spec diesel. It may well be used for swirl flaps or other purposes on other vehicles but the uk diesels don't have swirl flaps.

And then #1 should be the small one: #11747810831 for, I guess, swirl flaps or engine mounts, or both...? Quote:
Maybe I'll sound stupid now, but are all engine mounts on all E53s hydraulic controlled? TIS calls #11747810831: electric changeover valve of damping-controlled hydraulic bearing (DSHL), so maybe then it has nothing to do with swirl flaps. |
Swirl flaps and engine mounts use similar on/off type vacuum solenoid. Solenoid for engine mounts is Nr.1 in the previous diagram. Vacuum hose for engine mounts with red stripe. The vacuum makes engine mounts softer to lower vibrations on low revs.
https://www.pss-autosoft.net/diagram...702FB67003.htm All facelift 3.0d models (M57N engine) with DPF (EU4) have intake manifold swirl flaps. There are M57N EU3 models without DPF and those don't have swirl flaps. After checking the diagrams it looks like all RHD variants are only manufactured as EU3 versions. |

Vacuum solenoid 1 - #11747796634 - (vacuum hose with blue stripe), located on the intake manifold controls EGR. Vacuum solenoid 2 - #11747810831 - (vacuum hose with the yellow stripe) is located on the intake manifold and controls swirl flaps. Vacuum solenoid 3 - #11747810831 - (vacuum hose with the red stripe) is located somewhere else (?), and is used to control engine mounts, which are again, hydraulic-controlled. Or something like that :dunno: Thanks again! I'll let you guys know if I finally managed to get rid of 4501 fault code. Maybe I'll also clean EGR in the process. But that's a discussion for another topic. |

Solenoid Nr.x on the previous diagram. Vacuum supply to all solenoids from distributor is plain black hose. The solenoid controlled vacuum has a dedicated colour stripe.
*Engine mounts Nr.1 - #11747810831 - (vacuum hose with the red stripe) located beside engine block, under intake manifold (B2231) *EGR Nr.2 - #11747796634 - (vacuum hose with blue stripe) located beside engine block, under intake manifold (B2244) https://www.pss-autosoft.net/diagram...57TUE_0010.png *Swirl flaps - #11747810831 - (vacuum hose with the yellow stripe) located on the intake manifold (B2365)(other two solenoids illustrated but not numbered in the picture) . |
Thank you, now I get it. I just have to check the situation in my engine bay.
