3.0d tensioner
Hi
i have a 2003 x5. I am trying to remove the aux belt tensioner. I have taken the 8mm nut off the rear of the tensioner behind the alternator but it will not pull out from the front. Thats the part with the pulley and rod. Thank you. Dave king |
The lever should come out just by pulling. If you are not replacing the actual tensioner you can just renew the pulley on the old lever.

3.0d tensioner
Thank you for your reply.
the problem is that tensioner is at an angle and the belt came off. This is because the tube/bearing the rod slides into has broken up causing the pulley to sit at an angle. Second belt shredded until i noticed. I have tried everything to lever it out. Thank you. Dave king |

This not mine.
just a pic of what i think is wrong |
Once the rear nut is removed, it can normally be pulled forward - you'll have to remove the radiator fan shroud to get enough clearance to do this (BTDT).
In your case it seems like the shaft is jammed in there. You may need to remove (and possibly replace) the entire tensioner assembly (#3) after removing the mounting bolts (#1). https://i.ibb.co/5h1mRP1/8OddVO7.png |

But there is a bush on the main belt tensioner shaft (obviously), but it seems it is only sold as part of the main timing cover... https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/282982_x800.jpg It may be that the bush used on the main belt tensioner is the same as the AC bush - the Russion forums (where you found the above image?) seem to infer they are the same. BMW # 64557788089 https://cdn.sxparts.com.ua/imgbank/BMW/64557788089.jpg But I guess your problem is.... you cannot remove the bush without pulling the tensioner arm out the front first. And that is what is stuck, right? With any luck, when you pull the arm out (not sure how to do this - limited lever force might work) the bush wil come with it. If not, you are going to need to remove the alternator (and EGR pipe?), remove the tensioner mech (#2, after removing bolts #1) from behind the timing cover, then drive the bush (and arm if still stuck) out from behind the cover. https://i.ibb.co/Dk3BfxR/8C1801M.png From a Russian forum... https://a.d-cd.net/XCAAAgFsD-A-1920.jpg Quite the pickle, if the video on this M57 E39 is anything to go by! :dunno: https://youtu.be/uQVMzK5Euo0 How do these arms ("poker" as the Russian forums translation calls them!) and bushes get so worn!!? They should not move about that much, unless the belt tension is all over the map! Good luck!! |
Thank you very much.
I have ordered the tube bearing from BMW. Just cant get the shaft out. Just so tight to work on.. Thank you. dave king |
