anyone fixed door locks?

These door locks seem to have a specified life span, mine have all started to act up this past year, the two rear doors now only lock and unlock manually.

With $250 a piece new, has anyone attempted to repair their own locks, or found a more reasonably priced source for locks?

There are lots of threads about the door locks on this site, you just need to do a search, sometimes google works better.

yes lots of threads about how to take out the old and install a new one. my search though is to find anyone who might have repaired the broken one instead of simply replace. And how did the repair turn out.

I have a very detailed how to repair DLA. $12 vs. $235.

Search awr-fix in the title and andrewwynn user.

Are you talking about the lock actuator or the door handle carrier? The door handle carrier is an known weak point and Andrew has an excellent $12 fix for them to prevent them from ever breaking again. If it is the lock actuators, I don't recall there being much discussion of those on here. I have 274,000 miles on my X and I've never had an issue with them.

exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you andrewwynn
there's a lot of good stuff with awr-fix title I wasn't aware of. still don't know what awr-fix means other than it means good material.
Thanks again.

Actually the DHC is more like 25¢ fix. The DLA is the $12 motor swap.

Both can be found searching for thread started by me with awr-fix title

Awr-fix means it is one of my fixes. I decided to use that in the title specifically for search results

actually, andrewwynn has very good solutions on that thread for both the DHC as well as the actuator. I was looking for the actuator fix.

Cars set to auto lock will wear them or faster. I had one fail by 205,000 butt wife had four fail by 180,000.

Garaged cars that go though half as many lock/unlock cycles should last a lot longer.

They fail from the brushes wear and I suspect climate will affect that greatly

Did you ever post where to buy the door lock actuator motors, andrew? I don't see it in your thread: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...or-repair.html

andrewwynn 05-24-2023 01:19 PM

I bought from Amazon

I never found the long shaft version so I only harvest the brush end of the motor and swap it over.

The long shaft version is on E-Bay

Perrier 05-24-2023 01:36 PM

specs for long shaft version are ? 22mm ?

I tried the inexpensive fix in the Door Handle but did not work.
Bought a new item from BMW dealer for ~ $110.
Not too bad for sth that lasted 15 yrs/120K miles.

The door actuator is a different item.

Bdc101 05-26-2023 09:36 AM

Yeah, it's important to note that the door handle, the door lock, and the door lock actuator are all separate things.

What's even more amazing is that EACH ONE tends to break because it's been designed poorly. Really showing just how high quality this German engineering is. A real "You had one job" moment.

andrewwynn 05-26-2023 10:55 AM

Worse: when bmw saw that the DHC would self destruct with far greater frequency in cold climate they made a revised version to attempt to fix the problem and fixed the wrong part did no good whatsoever.

The handle will break due to under engineering

The DHC breaks due to over engineering

The DLA fails due to sourcing inferior tiny motors

Bdc101 05-26-2023 11:00 AM

Just a testament to the superiority of German Engineering

andrewwynn 05-26-2023 01:51 PM

My biggest complaint is the eu forces BMW too use shitty rubber for the internal engine seals and they don't use proper rubber even inn the USA.
