M62tu valley pan and intake manifold job

Hey all,

Today I talked the valley pan in my 03 4.6is and resealed the intake as well. one thing that has me stumped is that when I did this job on an 03 4.4i a few years back there was a long vacuum line that connected to the PCV plate on the back of the manifold and ran under the intake. My X5 does not have this line but looks like the line is coming from by the oil separator (no it is not the trans vent tube). If this is incorrect where is the line running under the intake supposed to go when it reaches the front of the motor?

The 4.6 and 4.4 intakes, ccv and separator systems should be identical. Are you taking about hose #12: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_2817

That one runs from the insanely fragile and tiny nipple on the CCV to the smaller of the two return hard-lines that empty separated oil into the pan, down by the starter. It’s a huge pain to install since it runs under the intake and there is so little room to connect it, both to the CCV nipple and the oil return line. I was changing my starter a few month ps ago and realized that it could make things easier to do the CCV and separator job to unbolt the return line at the pan (probably needs the crush washer changed anyway). Then a helper could push the return line up which might allow for easier connecting of the two hoses at the top (the thin one above, and the very short one from the bottom of the separator).

Beyond that, the X5 4.x intake has a breather line inside of the intake from front to back, where it attaches to the CCV. It’s the only thing running front to back in the intake…and it’s inside of the intake. It has o rings that should to be replaced when the intake is off. Number 7 here: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_2281

Yes, #12 is what i'm referring to. On a 4.4i X5 I did this job on, that line ran towards the front of the engine but I cant remember where to, but you're saying that the routing where it bends and goes back down on the passenger rear of the motor is correct?

Yep, it just goes from the rear left of the valley to the rear right. From the CCV nipple to the smaller of the two oil return lines that dump into the at the bottom right corner (of the pan). It’s a pain to make the connections, while holding the intake up a bit, and route the hose while leaving enough slack to make the connection to #14. I ran it over the coolant pipes, but couldn’t find anything definitive about over or under these pipes, or if it matters.

Yea, Mine is pretty kinked where it meets the CCV nipple as it doesn't have enough slack in it.
