New bump stops allowing water through
Hi guys. A few months ago my amplifier ended up under water when water was getting in the trunk. I replaced a couple of parts to solve it and one of the issues was the old bump stops for the rear hatch were blown; the gaskets had small holes in them, allowing water through. I bought the upgraded spring-loaded bump stops and installed these. Asked the dealer if any sealant should be used but they said no, it's just a straight forward replacement part.
I tightened it best I could with the 30mm nut on the back, but yesterday I noticed that even now water is still getting in. Back when I installed the new ones, I made sure to add some towels right on the 30mm nut to make sure water would not destroy my brand new amplifier. Yesterday I took a look at the towel and the right side was completely soaked in water (it's been raining a lot last 2 weeks). Should these bump stops be installed with sealant or something? EDIT: The OEM number is 51247171558 |
What bump stops are you talking about?

I installed those and have not noticed any water intrusion.
I don't recall any gaskets on the original bump stops or the upgraded ones ?? But I don't see the harm in adding a little sealant. Go for it. |
If I'm going off memory, there is a thin gasket behind the metal plate.

I replaced mine a few month’s ago too and haven’t had any issues. I seem to recall they are side-specific? Could you have reversed them? I do recall a gasket as well, and that a large socket was needed to get to the nut, which was a pain to tighten as the whole thing wasn’t secure and stable during tightening until it was basically tight (trying to crank it down on a curved surface). Could yours be off center slightly?

I've added some sealant to the rubber on both sides yesterday. Made sure to add a towel temporarily so no rain water will touch the sealant.
I did notice when I took off the bump stop that water was definitely getting in judging by the dirt marks. See image below. When I re-installed it, you can see the rubber gasket being pushed out of the way a bit even if it's not all that tight. I did end up just tightening it quite hard and hoping the sealant will fill any micro gaps it leaves. Not really fully sure this is the way to go to be honest... https://i.imgur.com/FOKdMVP.jpg |
I don't believe this is your issue but in your pic, on the bottom right, you seems to have a raised edge/ a burr of paint or metal ?
Are you sure it's tightened down snug ? I recall a straight extension won 't cut it on one side but does require the use of a wobble ...Going off memory |
Problem solved! Turns out the rubber for the trunk's wiringloom had been pushed slightly in, allowing water to seep in and end up at the exact same location. Also took off both the bump stops, turns out somehow Left and Right got mixed up. Re-installed them properly with some fresh sealant to make sure no water will even get in here again and fixed the wiring loom rubber as well.
@jsoto: I noticed this as well but it looks bigger on the photo. The rubber piece seals this off. The bump stops have now been re-tightened and should be good to go! Thanks for all the help guys! |
